A New York-based sportswriter came under fire on Twitter this weekend after questioning Colin Kaepernick’s postgame wardrobe choices.
Kapernick led his San Francisco 49ers to a 23-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers, accounting for a pair of touchdowns and outplaying opposing quarterback Cam Newton. However, the 26-year-old’s decision to wear a backwards hat while meeting with the media drew the ire of Sal Maiorana, a sportswriter who covers the Buffalo Bills for the Democrat and Chronicle.
In a tweet that has since been deleted, Maiorana asserted that Kaepernick’s backwards hat was somehow disrespectful to the media. “Kaepernick. Always so media friendly. Turn your cap around and act like a professional quarterback,” Maiorana wrote.
Twitter users criticized Maiorana, accusing him of being an Internet “troll” and attempted to provoke a reaction from 49ers fans. But the sportswriter didn’t seem to regret his tweet—in fact, he wrote a follow-up tweet, claiming that he had experienced a “laugh riot” while viewing the angry responses from Kaepernick fans.

Maiorana’s tweet also drew a strong response from his fellow sportswriters. Dylan Bishop, a writer for Draft Mecca, posted a photo of all the quarterbacks who have been spotted wearing their hats backwards; Tony Romo, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Aaron Rodgers, Matt Stafford, and Jay Cutler are all guilty of Maiorana’s least favorite wardrobe choice.
