With their national title dreams seemingly dashed, the No. 14 Miami Hurricanes host Virginia Tech’s vaunted defense without top rusher Duke Johnson on Saturday night at Sun Life Stadium.

Johnson broke his right ankle late in the third quarter of the Canes 41-14 loss to Florida State a week ago, and Miami tumbled down the polls and BCS rankings. The sophomore reportedly underwent surgery earlier this week, but he is out for the rest of the season.

The injury stunts a stellar second year from Johnson, who is second in the ACC with 920 yards and six touchdowns. Sophomore Dallas Crawford should get the most of touches for the rest of the season. He’s tallied 294 yards and a team-high nine touchdowns on 67 carries.

Even with Johnson out, the Canes still have an excellent shot of running the table and re-matching Florida State in the ACC title game.

The Hokies balanced and bruising defense has lost two straight, but are still eighth in the country letting up 16.9 points per game. Senior defensive end J.R. Collins tops Tech with 5.0 sacks on the year, and is one of four pass rushers to notch more than four sacks this season. Corners Kendall Fuller and Brandon Facyson have combined for nine interceptions and the Hokies are No. 1 in the ACC with 17 picks.

Miami kept up with the Seminoles and was only down by seven at halftime, but was shutout in the final two quarters and senior quarterback Stephen Morris tossed two interceptions to deny the Canes any chance of a comeback.

Until last week, Morris’s tendency to throw picks hadn’t affected Miami’s run, but how he handles the Hokies secondary could be Saturday night’s biggest matchup. Morris is second in the ACC with 10 interceptions to 12 touchdowns with 1,655 passing yards.

The only ACC quarterback more prone to interceptions is Tech’s Logan Thomas. He’s third in the conference in total offensive yards (2,351), but Thomas has chucked six interceptions during the Hokies slide and has 12 on the year.

Miami sophomore defensive backs Rayshawn Jenkins and Tracy Howard could play a huge role if Thomas continues his carelessness with the ball. The pair has totaled six of the Canes 14 interceptions, good for No. 3 in the conference.

The BYU Cougars hit the road in the hopes of snapping No. 21 Wisconsin’s 28-game non-conference home win streak on Saturday afternoon at Camp Randall Stadium.

Winners of five straight, BYU is on pace for its best season in four years, but must first stuff the Badgers seemingly unstoppable rushing attack before another trip to fellow independent No. 24 Notre Dame in two weeks.

An old BYU foe during his four year stint at Utah State, head coach Gary Andersen has Wisconsin riding a three-game win streak and tied for second place in the Big 10 standings.

Sophomore running back Melvin Gordon is second in the Big Ten with 1,074 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, but is coming off a 62-yard performance in Wisconsin’s 28-9 win on the road against Iowa. Gordon had rushed for at least 100 yards in six of the previous seven games, and it was just the second time all season he failed to reach the end zone.

Coupled with senior James White’s 804 yards and nine touchdowns, the Badgers own the nation’s 10 th ranked rushing attack.

Cougars linebacker Kyle Van Noy, who leads the team with 4.0 sacks and is tied for second with 46 total tackles, expects an electric, punishing matchup on Saturday.

"It is going to be very physical, " Van Noy said to the Salt Lake Tribune. "They are going to make plays, and we are going to make plays. It is going to be very entertaining, and I am happy that my family will be able to watch the game back home on ESPN."

BYU’s Tayson Hill leads the team in passing and rushing with 2,860 all-purpose yards, and notched four of his 20 touchdowns two weeks ago in the Cougars 37-20 win over Boise State.

The Badgers fifth ranked defense only allows 15.0 points per game, but they had some trouble earlier this year with another dual threat quarterback in Ohio State’s Braxton Miller, who threw four touchdowns and rushed for 83 yards in a 31-24 loss.

Still teams have struggled overall to get past the Badgers powerful front seven led by senior linebackers Chris Borland and Conor O’Neill, and junior nose tackle Warren Herring. The trio’s combined for seven of the Badgers 18 sacks, the fifth best mark in the Big Ten.
