The “DayZ” standalone game started development in August 2012 following the popularity of the original mod. Game designer Dean Hall, 32, teamed up with Bohemia Interactive and embarked upon his role as project lead. During the game's early development, Hall posted a raw video clip of the game’s multiplayer mode to YouTube, warning viewers that the footage “makes no effort to mask the variety of bugs.” Hall has also talked about moving the game to next-gen consoles like the PS4 or Xbox One, although no specific date has been set for either system.

“DayZ” is an open-world, multiplayer zombie game, where players must survive during a zombie apocalypse in a 225 sq. km. environment. The objective of the title is to search for health items such as food, supplies and medicine. You can also select weapons to fight off hungry zombies and other players. Developers plan to allow bases for supply protection, with the possibility of creating player-operated radio stations and two-way radio abilities.

Though the alpha version of the game still contained a number of glitches, fans were eager to buy. Hall openly alerted gamers about the rawness of the title, saying “it’s a true-blue alpha. Massive areas of the engine were entirely reworked, involving a large team of people over the last 12 months. Much of what these achievements will enable won’t be seen for many months – so I really plead for anyone who is on the fence to take a skeptical approach – watch streams, read reviews, watch some let’s play and form your opinion. You could always come back to the game in three, six months’ time and buy it then.” He also added that "we strongly advise you not to buy and play the game at this stage unless you clearly understand what Early Access means and are interested in participating in the ongoing development cycle." Despite this, gamers are clamoring to play the title, leaving favorable reviews on its user forum.

“DayZ” is available for $30 on Steam. Have you played the zombie survival game? What types of bugs and glitches have you encountered? Leave a comment below.

Mars One sent out the call for applicants willing to become the first human colonists on Mars. More than 200,000 applied and the organization has whittled down its candidate pool to just 1,058 individuals. The astronaut hopefuls are at the beginning of a selection process that could see them land on the red planet in 2020.

Mars One co-founder Bas Lansdorp said he was overwhelmed by the number of applicants and the response to the foundation’s attempt to settle a human colony on Mars. With 200,000 applicants, Lansdorp and the selection committee had to sort through all the candidates to determine which individuals were truly serious about becoming an astronaut and securing a one-way ticket to Mars.

While the mission may be a serious one that’s not to say the applicant pool was boring by any stretch of the imagination. Lansdorp said in a statement, “The challenge with 200,000 applicants is separating those who we feel are physically and mentally adept to become human ambassadors on Mars from those who are obviously taking the mission much less seriously. We even had a couple of applicants submit their videos in the nude!”

Being an astronaut is no easy task but the application process was not limited to rocket scientists or individuals with military. Instead, Mars One was looking for individuals over the age 18, in good health with a strong grasp of the English language and have the “five key characteristics of an astronaut” which are resiliency, adaptability, curiosity, ability to trust and creativity/resourcefulness.

The 1,058 selected candidates will be notified by email, notes Mars One. Of the selected candidates, 586 were male and 472 were female. In terms of age, 357 candidates were under the age of 25; 415 were between the age of 26 and 35; 177 between 36 and 45; 83 between 46 and 55; and 26 over the age of 56, with the max age set at 81.

In terms of nationality, 107 countries were represented in the candidate pool. The United States had the most candidates, 297, followed by Canada (75), India (62), Russia (52), Australia (43), China (40) and Great Britain (40). Per region, North and South America had 458 candidates, Europe had 282 candidates, Asia had 218 candidates, Africa had 54 candidates and Oceania had 46 candidates.

The majority of candidates were employed, 813, while 164 candidates were still in school and 81 candidates were unemployed.

While there will be plenty of time to celebrate, there are several rounds left in the selection process. Round 2 will consist of a medical assessment by a doctor followed by an interview with the Mars One selection committee.

The pool will be narrowed down further before the start of Round 3. Candidate groups of 20-40 applicants will be separated by region and these groups will be compete in tasks and challenges that simulate life on Mars. The potential astronauts will need to demonstrate the ability to work together and adapt to conditions on an alien world. The final round will feature groups of four candidates that will face new challenges and training in a Mars One outpost. Six groups of four will become employed Mars One astronauts.

“We expect to begin understanding what is motivating our candidates to take this giant leap for humankind. This is where it really gets exciting for Mars One, our applicants, and the communities they’re a part of,” said Norbert Kraft, Chief Medical Office of Mars One.

Josh Richards was one of the selected Mars One applicants and shared the news on Instagram.

getdiscountz.blogspot.com ® US October Jobs Report 2013: Nonfarm Payrolls Added 204,000, Unemployment Rate Ticked Up To 7.3%

The delayed October employment report, which was originally scheduled for Nov. 1, is surprisingly upbeat, raising the prospect that the Federal Reserve could start pulling back its bond purchases sooner, especially after a strong growth of 2.8 percent reported for the third quarter.

Employers added 204,000 jobs in October, the Labor Department said Friday, widely beating estimates of an increase of 120,000 and the 148,000 jobs created in September. Average job growth over the past three months exceeded a 200,000 pace, matching the strong gains recorded earlier this year. Private sector added 212,000 jobs last month, the strongest read since February.

Moreover, the revisions to prior months clearly show that the labor market was healthier than previously thought. Hiring for September and August were revised up by a combined 60,000. The establishment and household surveys have different ways of classifying workers. In the establishment report, employees are counted as on payroll if they receive pay during the survey week which, as usual, was the week containing the 12th of the month (Oct. 6-12). While the nonessential federal employees were not at work during that week, they received back pay to cover the shutdown, so they will show up in the payroll survey.

In fact, the federal government shutdown had little, if any, impact on payrolls. Manufacturing increased by a healthy 19,000 and construction increased by 11,000. Federal employment fell by a modest 12,000, because those workers affected by the shutdown received their back pay when they returned, which means they were counted as employed in the establishment survey.

“There were no discernible impacts of the partial federal government shutdown on the estimates of employment, hours, and earnings from the establishment survey,” the Labor Department said.

The largest job gain in October took place at retailers, bars and restaurants, which tend to boost hiring temporarily for the holiday season. The leisure and hospitality sector added 53,000 jobs last month.

“This report shows that the economy is continuing to move forward. The caveat to it is that we are still not seeing an increase in higher paying jobs that will generate better spending going forward,” said ITG Investment Research Chief Economist Steve Blitz. “But work is work and it’s better than nothing.”

The unemployment rate is a different story, however. The shutdown pushed the jobless rate higher to 7.3 percent from 7.2 percent in September. That’s the first increase in three months. The unemployment rate is derived from a separate Labor Department survey of households rather than the payrolls tally.

While the household survey will count furloughed federal workers as employed, the household survey will record them as unemployed, according to the Labor Department’s fact sheet. The same happened during the late 1995 and early 1996 shutdown. On that occasion, payroll employment continued to rise while household employment fell.

At the start of the recent shutdown, roughly 800,000 federal government employees were told to stay at home. But by the time of the reference week for the household survey, 350,000 civilian defense employees had been recalled to work. That suggests a maximum of 450,000 government workers will have been classed as unemployed.

“That explains the 720,000 drop in the labor force and the 735,000 decline in the household survey measure of employment,” Capital Economics’ Paul Ashworth said.

As a result, the labor force participation rate – a measure of the proportion of the population employed or seeking employment – dropped from 63.2 percent to 62.8 percent, the lowest level since March 1978. With those federal employees back at work now, all of this should be reversed in November's report.

The average work week for private employees stood at 34.4 hours last month. That compares to 34.3 hours a year earlier. Average hourly earnings was up to $24.10, bringing year's gain to 2.2 percent, or 52 cents a week on average.

Market sentiment around the Fed has swung dramatically in the past six months -- in the spring it was “QE infinity,” by the fall it was “tapering regardless of the data” and more recently some seem to again see QE infinity.

The Fed surprised Wall Street in September by continuing its $85-billion-per-month bond-buying program, rather than beginning to wind it down as widely expected.

The central bank hit the snooze button again in October, but left the prospect of a December “taper” on the table, saying any decision will depend on the economic data.

“Once again, the U.S. economy appears to be overcoming a summer swoon. In our opinion, the data would justify the Fed reducing the pace of its asset purchases in December,” Ashworth said.

While some have turned bitcoins, a digital currency designed to be as anonymous as cash, into fortunes with underground drug empires or Ponzi schemes, others just did it on accident. Kristoffer Koch spent less than $27 (150 kroner) to buy 5,000 bitcoins in 2009, an amount now worth about $866,000.

The kicker is that Koch completely forgot he even had the digital fortune. He discovered Bitcoin when writing a thesis on encryption, but never gave it another thought until the currency’s recent meteoric rise in value started dominating headlines.

Koch told NRK that he couldn’t even remember the password to his digital Bitcoin wallet. When he figured it out, he found that the 5,000 bitcoins were still there.

Bitcoin was worth as much as $266 per bitcoin in April 2013, leading to the currency’s mainstream popularity and some high-profile investors. Soon after, it dropped back down to $50 and remained in constant flux since then. The closure of Silk Road caused the value of Bitcoin to plummet again, but then quickly climbed back up to $197. Its current price is about $213 per bitcoin, according to the Bitcoin exchange, Mt. Gox.

Koch plans to use about one-fifth of his new fortune to buy and renovate a three-bedroom apartment in Toyen, one of the wealthiest areas in Oslo, Norway.

getdiscountz.blogspot.com ® US Initial Jobless Claims Falls To 292,000, Lowest Since 2006; Fed September Tapering Near?

The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits plunged last week, but much of the decline appeared to be linked to technical issues in claims processing. Thus, the last major reading of the U.S. labor market health before the Federal Reserve meeting next week should be taken with a grain of salt.

In the week ended September 7, applications for unemployment insurance payments dropped to 292,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. That’s the lowest level since April 2006. Economists surveyed by Reuters expected claims to rise to 330,000 from the prior week's unrevised 323,000.

But Labor Department analyst said instead of a sudden improvement in the labor market, the majority of the decline was linked to the fact that two states were upgrading their computer systems and did not process all the claims they received during the week. The Labor Day holiday may have also skewed the report.

The four-week moving average, which normally provides a better indication of the underlying trend in labor markets than the weekly number of jobless claims, fell by 7,500 to 321,250. That’s the lowest level since October 2007.

The number of people filing for benefits after an initial week of aid decreased by 73,000 to 2.87 million in the week ended August 31. The continuing claims figure doesn't include the number of Americans receiving extended benefits under federal programs.

Fed policymakers are debating how and when to trim their $85 billion in monthly bond purchases amid mixed economic data. Jobless rate fell to 7.3 percent in August, the lowest since December 2008. However, it fell for the wrong reason. The labor force participation rate, which gauges the proportion of population in the labor force, fell to 63.2 percent from 63.4 percent in July, the lowest since August 1978.

The Federal Open Market Committee will meet Sept. 17-18 to consider the future for the third round of quantitative easing known as QE3.

getdiscountz.blogspot.com ® Financial Crisis Cost Average U.S. Family Up To $120,000, Or An Entire Year's Economic Output, Dallas Fed Says

“The worst downturn in the United States since the 1930s was distinctive. Easy credit standards and abundant financing fueled a boom-period expansion that was followed by an epic bust with enormous negative economic spillover,” the bank’s economists wrote.

The data show that U.S. household net worth fell by 24 percent in the period from the third quarter of 2007 through the first quarter of 2009. That was a drop of $16 trillion.

“Our bottom-line estimate of the cost of the crisis, assuming output eventually returns to its pre-crisis trend path, is an output loss of $6 trillion to $14 trillion. This amounts to $50,000 to $120,000 for every U.S. household, or the equivalent of 40 to 90 percent of one year’s economic output,” the report concluded.
