Liverpool will meet Oldham Athletic for the third successive year in the FA Cup on Sunday, with the Premier League high-flyers looking to avenge last season’s shock defeat in the fourth round. While Liverpool won 5-1 two years ago, Oldham turned the tables with a 3-2 victory at Boundary Park 12 months ago.

Back at Anfield and with Liverpool rejuvenated this season, the League One Side face a massive task to repeat their heroics. After back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea that saw Brendan Rodgers’ side slip from first to fifth in the Premier League, they responded with a 2-0 win against Hull City that the circumstances led Rodgers to call their “best win of the season.”

Having been knocked out of the League Cup early and with no European action this season, there is every reason for Liverpool to go all out to deliver the first trophy of Rodgers’ reign. Still, after a hectic festive period, there is likely to be some rotation to the side on Sunday.

Luis Suarez may well be rested while midfielder Lucas Leiva may also be deemed in need of a breather. One of those coming into the side could well be Steven Gerrard, who made his return from injury as a substitute against Hull. Indeed, Liverpool’s assistant manager Colin Pascoe has said that the club should soon be getting several players back to fitness.

“You will get injuries at any club, but unfortunately for ourselves, we've had a couple close together,” he explained, according to Liverpool’s official website. “Daniel [Sturridge] has been out, Stevie's been out. But we've played well. It's not a big squad, but sometimes when you get a tight squad together, you work hard.

"That's showing with results and it's great that Stevie has come back now. Daniel will be back soon. Jon Flanagan has been playing so well, it was unfortunate he got injured.

"So it will be three or four players, hopefully, in the next week or 10 days that come back."

Oldham beat Wolves and Mansfield, both in replays, to reach this stage of the competition. However, the league form of Lee Johnson’s side has been less than impressive and a run of six games without a victory leaves them above the relegation zone in England’s third tier on goal difference alone. While an upset is a distant possibility, there is the likelihood of one intriguing storyline, with Oldham’s squad including a certain Anton Rodgers -- the son of Liverpool’s boss.

Where to watch: The FA Cup third round clash will kick off at Anfield at 10 a.m. ET. A live stream, which you view at your own discretion, will be available here.

Ahead of their trip to Osasuna on Saturday, Carlo Ancelotti says he is happy with the current form of his Real Madrid side and dismissed reports that Radamel Falcao will arrive in the January transfer window. Since losing the Clasico in late October Madrid have won five straight matches in La Liga to close to within three points of Barcelona at the top of the table, looking increasingly impressive in the process.

“The team’s attitude is good,” he said, according to Spanish sports daily AS. “Now we have more intensity at the back and more clarity to our game. We are in a good moment of form and we have to continue with the same attitude because the season is very long.”

With Karim Benzema having struggled at the start of the campaign, reports resurfaced linking Los Merengues with a move for former Atletico Madrid striker Falcao, despite his summer move to Monaco. But having scored an extraordinary 22 goals in those five consecutive league wins, Ancelotti does not view signing a new front man as a priority for Madrid when the transfer window reopens.

“He’s a great player but we’re quite happy with the strikers we already have,” he said. “The team is scoring a lot of goals and so there is no need to sign Falcao at this point in time.”

Cristiano Ronaldo comes into the match on the back of breaking the record for the most goals scored in a Champions League group phase having netted for the ninth time in the 2-0 win away at FC Copenhagen in midweek. Gareth Bale is in equally prolific form, having struck a hat-trick in his last league encounter -- the 4-0 win over Real Valladolid.

Their form has meant reduced playing time for Angel di Maria. As in the summer, there have been reports that the Argentine winger wants away from the Bernabeu, but Ancelotti believes that he is happy to stay at the club while confirming that he will play some part in Saturday’s encounter. Ancelotti confirmed that Raphael Varane will return from a knee injury in January, while Sami Khedira and Fabio Coentrao also remain on the sidelines.

Against Osasuna, there is every reason to think that Madrid’s winning run will continue. While things have improved for Javi Garcia’s men since losing six of their first seven matches, three defeats in their last four encounters leaves them just a point above the drop zone. Garcia believes his side has a chance of upsetting Madrid in front of their own fans at the El Sadar, although having scored just six goals at home all season that is a big ask.
