Gerardo Martino has again been forced to defend the style of play he has implemented since taking charge of Barcelona. In Saturday’s 4-0 win over Rayo Vallecano, Barcelona failed to enjoy the majority of possession in a match for the first time in five years. But Martino has hit back at the criticism, claiming that if he were from the Barcelona system, like predecessors Tito Vilanova and Pep Guardiola, or Dutch, like Johan Cruyff, Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkard, then he would not face such scrutiny.

“Whenever you have a team that has been as successful as this side, these debates will occur, especially when the coach isn't from Catalonia or from Holland,” he said, according to Spanish sports daily AS. “But my main concern is how the players are performing and at the moment the team are solid and the players are happy, so that makes me relaxed."

Martino has stated that there has been a slight evolution in style -- something which Gerard Pique has welcomed by claiming that the team is no longer “slaves” to tiki-taka -- although exclaimed that it was hardly revolutionary.

“I haven't come here to make any changes, and if you want to question our possession, then last year the average was 66 percent and this year it's 65.8 percent,” he explained. “If because of that 0.2 percent you want to say we have changed everything, then go ahead. And with regards to us playing long passes, I remember that Rafa Marquez used to play here, so it's not as if the club hasn't seen that before.”

Barcelona will have Sergio Busquets back available when they take on Real Sociedad at the Camp Nou on Tuesday. However, Cesc Fabregas has been rested, while Carles Puyol is still not fit enough to return.

Their opponents come into the match in need of a positive performance. After a fourth-placed La Liga finish last season, the campaign started brightly for new coach Jagoba Arrasate with an opening day league win and an impressive two-legged performance against Lyon to comfortably progress to the Champions League group stage. But Sociedad are without a victory since and, indeed, have gone three matches without scoring.

Loan signing from Queens Park Rangers, Esteban Granero was ruled out for six months with a knee ligament injury last week and Sociedad are expected to draft in Barcelona’s Mexican midfielder Jonathan dos Santos on loan as cover.

Barcelona (probable)

G: Valdes

D: Daniel Alves, Pique, Mascherano, Adriano

M: Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta

F: Pedro, Messi, Neymar

Real Sociedad (probable)

G: Bravo

D: Estrada, Gonzalez, Inigo Martinez, De la Bella

M: Markel, Pardo, Prieto

F: Griezmann, Seferovic, Vela

Prediction: Barcelona were vulnerable in the first half of each of their last two matches before going onto secure comfortable victories. On paper, Sociedad certainly have the attacking talent to punish Barcelona if there is similar sloppiness once again. However, that will take an improvement on the visitors’ recent performances.

With Busquets likely to come back in for Alex Song and add more control of the ball at the base of midfield, Barcelona should be steadier on Tuesday. It should be an entertaining fixture and Sociedad have the chance to spring a surprise if they play at their best, but Barcelona should emerge with a sixth-straight league victory to start the season.

It will certainly be done with painful reluctance, but there may be more than a few Arsenal fans casting envious glances at their fiercest rivals when they visit the Emirates on Sunday. Tottenham, boosted by the expected windfall from Gareth Bale’s sale have strengthened their team and squad in almost all areas during what -- admittedly with the final judgment still to come on the pitch -- has been a phenomenally successful transfer window.

Indeed, Tottenham have added three players just this week with the arrivals of Erik Lamela, Vlad Chiriches and Christian Eriksen. Arsenal, meanwhile, despite a much hyped war chest of their own, have yet to spend a single penny heading into the final embers of the window. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, though, has again tried to shift the focus to the quality players he believes he already has at his disposal rather than being drawn into another conversation about the transfer market.

"I must confess I am not too much worried about their risk and what they do," he said, according to Arsenal’s official website. "I believe you win games when you focus on yourself and the quality of our game.

"The only thing that counts in football - I can understand that it is very interesting for people to read the newspapers and see who goes in and out - but there is only one thing that if you really love football, is what happens on the pitch.”

Arsenal’s lack of signings has been compounded by a spate of injuries. With Mikel Arteta, Thomas Vermaelen and Alex-Oxlade-Chamberlain already out, Lukas Podolski, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey all suffered problems in the victorious second leg of the club’s Champions League playoff against Fenerbahce in midweek. Podolsk is set to miss between eight and 10 weeks, but Wenger has said that Ramsey and Wilshere will be involved on Sunday.

Tottenham secured their place in the Europa League group stage as they made it four wins out of four to start the season with a 3-0 win over Dinamo Tbilisi. Both their Premier League matches have been decided by Roberto-Soldado-converted penalties.

Aaron Lennon is a doubt for the trip to the Emirates with a foot injury, while Lamela, Chiriches and Eriksen are unlikely to feature.

Arsenal (probable)

G: Szczesny

D: Sagna, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Gibbs

M: Ramsey, Wilshere

Walcott, Rosicky, Cazorla

F: Giroud

Tottenham (probable)

G: Lloris

D: Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Rose

M: Capoue, Paulinho

Townsend, Dembele, Chadli

F: Soldado

Prediction: There can be little doubt that, as things stand, Tottenham have a superior squad to their north London rivals. In terms of the teams the two sides will feel on Sunday, however, things are more even. That is especially true given that Andre Villas-Boas is still fully integrating his host of new arrivals.

The midfield battle promises to be intriguing. Arsenal still painfully lack a natural defensive presence in midfield, although Ramsey has been disciplined in his recent performances. Tottenham, conversely, have a midfield packed with strength, with Etienne Capoue, Mousa Dembele and the box-to-box Paulinho.

It is easy to see Tottenham enjoying plenty of joy on the break with the pace too they have out wide. But Arsenal also have the ability to cause problems in the final third and another entertaining contest between these two sides could be in store.

Aston Villa welcome Liverpool to Villa Park on Saturday in high spirits, according to manager Paul Lambert, despite the controversial nature of their 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in midweek. Having fought back from the concession of an early goal at Stamford Bridge, Branislav Ivanovic remained on the pitch despite striking Christian Benteke with an elbow and subsequently went onto score the game-winner. That a late penalty was also denied them only added to Villa’s sense of indignation. Yet, after a thrilling 3-1 victory at Arsenal on the opening day, Lambert has said that his players are rightly feeling positive.

“We have come away from two difficult games with our confidence really high,” he explained. "We're vibrant -- and so we should be because of the way we have played. The lads are playing incredibly well at the moment. We have got the bit between the teeth, which is great.

"They have been outstanding in the last couple of games. We went to a team who could win the Barclays Premier League and who will be playing in the Champions League. But we took the game to them and gave them a right fright.”

Nathan Baker will again miss out for Villa after being taken off against Arsenal, but Ciaran Clark is expected to be fit following a head wound suffered on Wednesday.

Liverpool should also begin the match in a healthy state of mind after they opened up their Premier League campaign with a victory over Stoke. Despite dominating the match, it took a solitary goal from Daniel Sturridge and a dramatic late penalty save by debutante Simon Mignolet to secure the victory. And it was a win that manager Brendan Rodgers believes showed his side’s developing character.

“That's been a big emphasis for us as we've gone along since I've come in,” he said. "In order to be a winner you have to have the belief and that was something that, maybe coming in last year, we weren't able to do consistently. But we've picked up a lot. It might only have been a small thing last week but to get that win shows the development, mentally, in the group.”

Luis Suarez, the subject of fresh transfer speculation in recent days, will continue to serve his suspension. Fellow-Uruguayan Sebastian Coates will miss most of the season due to an injury picked up on international duty. Left-back Aly Cissokho, signed on-loan from Valencia, is likely to be on the bench.

Aston Villa (probable)

G: Guzan

D: Lowton, Vlaar, Clark, Luna

M: El Ahmadi, Westwood, Delph

F: Weimann, Benteke, Agbonlahor

Liverpool (probable)

G: Mignolet

D: Johnson, Toure, Agger, Enrique

M: Lucas, Gerrard

Aspas, Henderson, Coutinho

F: Sturridge

Prediction: The pace of Aston Villa’s front three will pose a significant threat to Liverpool. Christian Benteke, in particular, has started the season in outstanding form and the aging legs of Kolo Toure could have a tough evening. In midfield, too, Villa play at a high tempo that Liverpool will have to match. Jordan Henderson, who was encouraging in Liverpool’s opener, will likely have to do plenty of running, with neither Lucas nor Steven Gerrard now overly dynamic.

Going forward, though, Liverpool were a joy to watch at times against Stoke, The interchange and movement between Iago Aspas, Philippe Coutinho and Sturridge is likely to be a handful for a villa backline that is still less than airtight. An intriguing draw could be on the cards.
