Real Madrid will aim to end 2013 with a victory on Sunday away at a Valencia side that has just parted company with coach Miroslav Djukic. A 3-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid proved to be the result that sealed the fate of Djukic, who was only appointed in the summer.

While the Serbian has carried the can, Valencia’s problems run much deeper and have existed for much longer than his short reign. A huge debt has meant that the club’s best players have been sold off year after year, with Roberto Soldado this summer following in the footsteps of Jordi Alba, Juan Mata, David Silva and David Villa.

It has become increasingly unrealistic to think that Valencia could maintain their position as best of the rest in Spain, never mind actually challenging powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid. Valencia currently sit in 10th place in La Liga, a full 10 points away from a Champions League place. San Lorenzo coach Juan Antonio Pizzi is reportedly set to arrive from Argentina to take the reins, but Valencia will be led in the meantime by Nico Estevez, who oversaw a 1-0 victory over Gimnastic in midweek to progress in the Copa del Rey.

He faces a tough task to repeat that success on Sunday. Real Madrid can ill afford to drop further points in their last match before the festive break, with a 2-2 draw against Osasuna last weekend leaving them 5 points off Barcelona and Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga.

While Madrid can take some credit from that result in coming back from 2-0 down and being down to 10 men after Sergio Ramos’s dismissal, manager Carlo Ancelotti will be disappointed that it was followed up by only a narrow 2-0 victory over third-tier side Olimpic in the Copa del Rey. Ramos will return to the side after serving his suspension, while Valencia will also have to deal with the threat of Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo after both were left out on Wednesday.

Gareth Bale will miss out, however, with the Welsh winger is still struggling with a calf injury. That means that Angel di Maria is likely to keep his place after scoring from the spot and setting up the other goal in the victory over Olimpic. Speculation continues to swirl over the Argentinean’s future, with suggestions that he is eager to leave the club. Pepe will definitely be missing for Madrid through suspension as they look to extend their winning streak at the Mestalla to five matches.

Captain Steven Gerrard believes that England have improved since their 4-1 humbling at the hands of Germany at the 2010 World Cup, despite their setback in losing 2-0 to Chile on Friday. The two old rivals will meet for the first time since that last-16 match in South Africa in Tuesday’s friendly at Wembley. After securing qualification last month with two impressive wins over Montenegro and Poland, an experimental side were well beaten by Chile. But Gerrard remains confident about the team’s credentials.

"I do feel we are a lot stronger,” he said, according to The Guardian. “There is a good mix of youth and experience in the squad at the moment. We are all moving forward and improving all the time. I look back to the Chile result last Friday and I came away from that game feeling different from a lot of people: I'm really confident that, if we were to meet Chile further on into a World Cup competition, we would have the players at full strength to go and beat them.”

Gerrard sat out the defeat to Chile, but will return to the side for the visit of Germany, when he will win his 108th cap and equal the mark of World-Cup winning captain Bobby Moore. Joe Hart, Ashley Cole, Andros Townsend and Daniel Sturridge will also come back into the side.

Germany have taken the opposite approach, having fielded a strong lineup in the draw in Italy last week. Manager Joachim Low has since allowed Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm and Mesut Ozil to depart back to their clubs, despite Sami Khedira joining the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ilkay Gundogan on the injury list. Low, though, has denied that he is disrespecting England with his team selection and sees it an ideal examination of some of his fringe players.

"What better test for these upcoming players than to go out in front of that partisan 80,000 crowd cheering their own team on,” he said, according to Sky Sports. “I need to experiment a bit and send a few players home who are already established.

"It is a deliberate acid test, not a "B team", and this is certainly no lack of respect to our hosts.”

One of those under the microscope will be Roman Weidenfeller. The Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper will be making his debut for his country, at the age of 33. One of the Bender twins, Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars or Dortmund’s Sven, is likely to take the place of Khedira, who faces an uphill task to make the World Cup after tearing his cruciate ligament.

Where to watch: The international friendly will kick off at 3 p.m. ET. Coverage will be provided by Fox Sports 1, with a live stream available on Fox Soccer2Go.

Xabi Alonso will make his first start of the season in Real Madrid’s short trip to take on local rivals Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, with Carlo Ancelotti set to make several changes to his side. Madrid are in the midst of a hectic run of fixtures, having followed up last weekend’s Clasico defeat with an incredible 7-3 victory over Sevilla on Wednesday. There will be little respite after the match at the Vallecas, with Madrid taking on Juventus in Turin three days later as they look to secure progress to the knockout phase of the Champions League.

“I am going to rotate the squad, but it will not be with Tuesday’s match in mind,” he said, according to Real Madrid’s official website. “We have to play with intensity and so some of the players who did not get a match against Sevilla will play.”

Alonso returned from injury by coming off the bench against Sevilla and Ancelotti confirmed that the midfielder will be in his starting lineup on Saturday. The victory over also saw a first home start for Gareth Bale and the summer signing announced himself on the Bernabeu stage with two goals and two assists. There has been much talk of how Bale would fit into the side, with Ancelotti opting for a front three of Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema on Wednesday. That meant Angel di Maria sitting on the bench, but Ancelotti was coy about whether that would continue and hinted that the Argentine could also be used in midfield -- as he is often deployed for his country.

"Di Maria can play in another position on the pitch,” he explained, according to Marca. “It's not a problem. I don't know if Bale, Cristiano and Benzema are going to play together, but the three of them are fit and available."

That array of attacking talent will likely be a daunting prospect for a Rayo Vallecano side that find themselves one place off the bottom of La Liga. After finishing in an impressive eighth place last season, it has been a real struggle this time around. A run of six-straight defeats was snapped by back-to-back wins, but they have since lost to Valladolid and Osasuna, conceding six goals in the process.

Rayo coach Paco Jemez is fully aware that his side has to improve to get anything against Madrid, but remains hopeful of a memorable win.

“We have to believe that it’s possible,” he said, according to Spanish sports daily AS. “I had a dream the other day that we beat them. I hope it comes true. To do it, we have to be perfect in terms of quantity and quality. In Pamplona on Wednesday, we have 60 percent possession and had 25 shots on target – decent figures but apart from that, we need to make less mistakes at the back and be more clinical in attack.”

Prediction: Rayo have not beaten their city rivals in the league since 1997 and it is hard to see that run coming to an end on Saturday. Jemez’s side will likely have plenty of the ball, but are also liable to leave themselves exposed at the other end. Against a Madrid attack full of pace and in buoyant mood, that is likely to prove fatal.
