Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has hit out at the Football League for putting his players’ “careers at risk” with their scheduling exacerbating the club’s hectic run of fixtures. Villas-Boas is furious that his side will have to play a League Cup tie against Aston Villa just two days after visiting Cardiff City in the Premier League. With Tottenham hosting Tromso in the Europa League on Thursday, it means they face a run of three games in six days. The fact that some Capital One Cup matches have been scheduled for Wednesday only adds to the Portuguese’s frustration.

“After this game [against Tromso] we have not only the Sunday game but the Tuesday game, which I found as an incredible surprise," Villas-Boas told a press conference. “How can a game be scheduled immediately after two days? It's putting the players' careers at risk.

"I find it absolutely incredible that we have to risk injuries to our players in a game that they play on that Tuesday. The second day of recovery is the most dangerous day for a player to pick up an injury.”

Villas-Boas has again stressed his determination to do well in the Europa League, yet he will doubtless be particularly wary of the fixture pileup it can bring. Last season Tottenham fell out of the top four in the Premier League as they featured at the sharp end of the Europa League. The former winner of the competition with Porto has since made efforts to address that potential problem, having, largely with the proceeds from the sale of Gareth Bale, strengthened his squad considerably. Those additions are sure to be needed in the coming days.

One of the new arrivals, Nacer Chadli, remains on the sidelines, though, with an abductor muscle strain. Longer terms injury victims Etienne Capoue and Aaron Lennon will also again miss out.

Tottenham are expected to have little trouble making the top two in a group that also contains Moldovans Sheriff Tiraspol and an Anzhi Makhachkala side that has just removed many of their better players from their wage bill. And Spurs’ Group K campaign begins by hosting a Tromso side that are currently battling at the wrong end of the Norwegian Tippeligaen with just seven rounds of fixtures remaining. Agnar Christensen’s team did, though, beat league leaders Rosenborg 1-0 on Sunday.

Tottenham (probable)

G: Friedel

D: Naughton, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Rose

M: Sandro, Paulinho

Lamela, Eriksen, Holtby

F: Soldado

Tromso (probable)

G: Sahlman

D: Fojut, Koppinen, Causevic, Ciss

M: Johansen, Drage, Andersen, Bendiksen

F: Moldskred, Ondrasek

Prediction: Tromso should pose little threat for Tottenham at White Hart Lane. The Norwegians lost the away leg of each of their three qualifying ties for the Europa League and, indeed, are only in the competition proper after Besiktas were disqualified from the competition. Tottenham now have enough quality to rotate, with the likes of Sandro and Lewis Holtby able to come in and the possibility of a debut for Argentinian Erik Lamela. Anything other than a comfortable win would be a major surprise.

Tottenham 3-0 Tromso

Where to watch: The Europa League Group K match will kick-off at 3.05 p.m. ET. Coverage will be provided by Fox Sports 1, with a live stream available on Fox Soccer 2Go.

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that Gareth Bale will make his Real Madrid debut against Villarreal on Saturday, although wouldn’t say whether it will be as a starter or as a substitute. Bale is finally able to step onto the pitch for Madrid after a protracted transfer saga throughout the summer followed by the recent international break. After missing almost all of pre-season, Bale got some valuable playing time as a second-half substitute for Wales against Serbia on Tuesday and Ancelotti believes that, while not at full fitness, the attacker is ready to play.

"He will travel with the team and he will play,” he said, according to Marca. “I don't know if he will start, but he will definitely take part. I don't know if it will be from the start; I still have to make that decision. But he's going to play."

"He's missed out on a normal preseason, but it is not the time to push him out of the team. He's going to train and play at the same time. He's fine. He's very excited and very motivated. His fitness isn't perfect, but it's not bad.”

There has been much speculation as to which position Bale will take up, but on that subject Ancelotti was clear. "He will play on the right flank,” he stated.

Ancelotti has also confirmed that he will hand a debut to another big-money signing, Asier Illarramendi. The €30 million signing from Real Sociedad has struggled with injury since his arrival, but, with Xabi Alonso, still unavailable, the midfielder will start.

“Illarramendi has worked very hard, he is intelligent and he will also play against Villarreal,” Ancelotti said. “He will play from the start."

Real Madrid, which will be without the injured Marcelo, have started the season with three straight league wins. Surprisingly joining them with that perfect record is their next opponents. It has been quite the return to the top flight for the Yellow Submarine after their one season in the Segunda Division. Things did not go so well for their Mexican duo on international duty this week, though, and Javier Aquino and Giovani dos Santos will both be looking to put Mexico’s two defeats behind them.

Villarreal (probable)

G: Asenjo

D: Mario, Musacchio, Dorado, Costa

M: Aquino, Trigueros, Bruno, Cani

Dos Santos

F: Pereira

Real Madrid (probable)

G: Lopez

D: Carvajal, Pepe, Ramos, Nacho

M: Khedira, Illarramendi

Di Maria, Isco, Ronaldo

F: Benzema

Prediction: Villarreal will be in confident mood and should give Madrid a good test on Saturday. Madrid threw away far too many points on the road against teams they will have expected to beat last season and they will not want to do that early on in this campaign. The arrival of Bale could have a motivating impact on Angel di Maria, but also on Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese is not one to be upstaged and he will be eager to remind everyone that he remains the dominant figure in the side. That should help ensure an away win.

Villarreal 1-3 Real Madrid

Where to watch: The match will kick-off at 4 p.m. ET and will be shown on beIN Sport. A free live stream will be available on beIN Sport Play.

Days after emerging unscathed from his first big test as Manchester United boss with a goalless draw against Chelsea, David Moyes will now attempt to accomplish something that eluded him in 11 years as Everton manager: win at Anfield.

It has been one of the main sticks used to attack Moyes’ ascension to one of the biggest jobs in the game that he was never able to taste victory away from home at any of the traditional top four of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and United. The Scot is fully aware that such a record will not be tolerated in his new role.

While he became accustomed to the fierce atmosphere of Merseyside derbies, Moyes is looking forward to his first taste of the historic rivalry between England’s two historically most successful clubs.

"Anfield has always been a difficult place to go," Moyes said, according to Manchester United’s official website. "It's a great stadium and I'm looking forward to going back there.

"[In some ways it's] no different to any other game as you can only get three points for a win but it'd be a big win if we can do that. Liverpool are one of the strong teams this season so if we can do that it can be a good start.

"I don't know [if it will be different going there with United] as I've not been involved in it yet. Everyone tells me it's a big rivalry, Liverpool and United, and it was like that with Everton as well. I'm looking forward to the game and part of coming to Manchester United is to be involved in these types of games."

Moyes’ predecessor, Sir Alex Ferguson, achieved his objective of knocking Liverpool firmly off their perch. Brendan Rodgers’ main objective is to now return the Merseysiders back to the Europe’s elite in the Champions League. And, after a season of beginning to implement his ideas last season, Liverpool have begun this campaign impressively with back-to-back victories. But Rodgers has claimed that his ambitions do not end there.

“We're not entering the league just to be fourth," Rodgers told the BBC. "Winning the league is about the best team not just the best players. That's our challenge.

"It's important for Liverpool to be up there; I think it's important for football for Liverpool to be there because this is one of the biggest clubs in the world. But it doesn't give you a divine right.”

Liverpool beat Notts County after extra time in the Capital One Cup in midweek but paid a heavy price. While Kolo Toure’s and Joe Allen’s injuries were not as bad as first feared, both seem unlikely to be fit for the weekend. Recent loan signing Aly Cissokho, meanwhile, could be up for up to six weeks.

Manchester United are in better health, with right-back Rafael the only injury doubt. Nani and Javier Hernandez could be involved for the first time this season.

Liverpool (probable)

G: Mignolet

D: Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique

M: Gerrard, Lucas

Aspas, Henderson, Coutinho

F: Sturridge

Manchester United (probable)

G: De Gea

D: Jones, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra

M: Carrick, Cleverley

Valencia, Rooney, Welbeck

F: Van Persie

Prediction: Moyes’ priority against Chelsea appeared to be to not lose the contest and it could be a similar scenario at Anfield. Liverpool should enjoy plenty of possession and will look to use the skill and movement of Philippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge and Iago Aspas to try and penetrate a strong United defense. Liverpool struggled against the top sides last season and, after a positive start to this campaign, this represents their first real test. Both sides may ultimately be reasonably happy to emerge with a point.

Liverpool 1-1 Manchester United

Ahead of the annual meeting between the winners of the Champions League and Europa League, Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho have both tried to shift attention from their own rivalry and onto the array of stars that will line up on the pitch in Prague. A meeting of Bayern Munich and Chelsea has plenty of history to it in itself -- plenty of Bayern players will still have nightmares about their Champions League final defeat to the London side on home soil in 2012 -- but much of the focus has been on the two men in the dugout.

Guardiola and Mourinho, of course, clashed frequently during the two seasons in which they managed across the divide of Spain’s two giants, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Before that there was a keenly contested Champions League semifinal when Mourinho’s Inter knocked out the Catalans. The Portuguese has only won three of his 15 meetings with Guardiola, however, a record he had a hard time accepting when it was presented to him in the pre-match press conference.

"Your statistics are very wrong," Mourinho initially said, according to BBC Sport. "Go and see what happened when I was with Inter in the Champions League semifinal, the King's Cup final with Real in Spain, the Super Cup in Spain.

"Maybe you are right and I am wrong but I don't care. This is not about us, it's about Chelsea and Bayern."

Guardiola too, who famously lost his normal cool demeanor during the most intense run of fixtures between Barcelona and Madrid in 2011, was also not keen to talk about the coaches.

"We're here for the players, not the coaches," Guardiola said. "Millions of people around the world will watch the game, not the coaches."

The rivalry is enhanced by the two being almost ideological opposites in their philosophy about the game. And it is those ideals that both men are still looking to imprint on the sides they took over this summer.

On paper, Mourinho is faced with the bigger overhaul, having taken over a squad that was ironically built in large part with the hope that Guardiola would soon lead it. In his second spell at Chelsea, Mourinho has showed once more his natural reactive tendencies in a goalless draw at Manchester United on Monday. In the two wins prior to that, though, there have been signs of the quality interplay his collection of attacking midfield talent can produce.

Guardiola, on the other hand, has taken over a side that has just won an unprecedented treble and was already moving toward playing the possession and high-pressing soccer that he favors. Bayern Munich won the first three matches in their Bundesliga title defense, but drew 1-1 away to Freiburg on Tuesday when Guardiola made several changes to his side.

Guardiola’s first signing at Bayern, Thiago Alcantara, will be missing after undergoing ankle surgery, but Bastian Schweinsteiger is available after suffering a knock in midweek.

Chelsea have strengthened this week with Samuel Eto’o and Willian having arrived from Anzhi Makhachkala, but neither will be involved in Prague. David Luiz could be fit to make his first appearance of the season.

Bayern Munich (probable)

G: Neuer

D: Lahm, Van Buyten, Dante, Alaba

M: Schweinsteiger

Robben, Gotze, Kroos, Ribery

F: Mandzukic

Chelsea (probable)

G: Cech

D: Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Cole

M: Ramires, Lampard

Mata, Oscar, Hazard

F: Torres

Prediction: Mourinho’s side will likely be happy to cede possession to Bayern as they were at Old Trafford earlier in the week. But, with Andre Schurrle struggling as a striker, of sorts, Fernando Torres could return. The crucial thing for Chelsea will be to get better service to their dangerous attacking players from midfield.

Guardiola has not been afraid to change a winning formula so far at Bayern. The double midfield pivot has been abolished, with the Spaniard instead looking to accommodate as many of his gifted playmakers as possible. That has led to some defensive vulnerability, which Chelsea will look to exploit on the break.

Chelsea could have some joy on the counter in what should be a closely fought match, yet Bayern are currently the more complete side and may just come out on top.
