The Indianapolis Colts have an opportunity to take a lead in the AFC South against arguably the league’s worst team in the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at EverBank Field.
The Colts and Andrew Luck squashed San Francisco 27-7 last week, and with rival Houston hosting undefeated and bruising Seattle, they can snatch the division lead.
Last week was also the debut of new running back Trent Richardson, and he didn’t disappoint with 34 rushing yards and a touchdown, complementing Ahmad Bradshaw’s 95 yards and score.
Luck was held to 159 yards passing, and rushed for one touchdown. It was his first game without a passing touchdown since November of last year at Jacksonville, but the Colts defense stepped up a huge way.
San Francisco could only manage three third down conversions, and Indianapolis forced quarterback Colin Kaepernick into an interception and a lost fumble.
Given the ability to rattle an opposing quarterback, the Jaguars should be worried.
In their 45-17 blowout loss to Seattle last week, Jacksonville’s Chad Henne was intercepted twice, sacked three times, and hit eight total times.
The majority of Henne’s 235 yards went to under appreciated receiver Cecil Shorts, who had eight catches for 143 yards. Shorts is tenth in the NFL in receiving yards but has yet to reach the endzone.
Running backs Maurice Jones-Drew and Jordan Todman were the only Jaguars to score, while the defense let up four passing touchdowns and 479 total offensive yards.
The loss dropped Jacksonville to 19th in total defense, and 29th in points allowed. The one bright spot was their ninth ranked secondary, but the Jaguars will miss defensive back Dwight Lowery and corner Dwayne Gratz, who are listed as out for Sunday.
