Rickie Lambert netted a goal and two assists, and powered Southampton’s 3-0 victory over Fulham on Saturday afternoon at Craven Cottage.
Lambert notched his seventh goal of the season and now leads the Saints in assists with seven, aiding Adam Lallana on his goal in the 64 th minute that ended the even nil-nil tie.
Lambert created some breathing room with his goal in the 70 th minute for a 2-0 lead, and then assisted leading Southampton scorer Jay Rodriguez with his goal five minutes later.
Fulham unfortunately extended their winless streak to four straight matches, and they haven’t netted a goal in three straight. Southampton keeper Artur Boruc blocked all four of Fulham’s targeted shots for his eighth clean sheet this season.
Both sides were evenly matched until Lallana broke through for his seventh goal of the year, completing a fastbreak off Lambert’s deft assist to the left side of the box and a shot across the goal past Cottagers keeper Maarten Stekelenburg.
Lambert’s goal came four minutes later with an excellent low cross from Nathaniel Clyne deep on the sideline and a soft right-footed touch to the bottom right corner.
In the 75 th minute Rodriguez padded Southampton’s lead after Lambert launched a clearing through ball and the English created space around two Fulham defenders for a right footed shot that rose above Stekelenburg.
Rodriguez is now tied for fifth in the Premier League scoring list with 11 goals this season. He along with Morgan Schneiderlin and Victor Wanyama were each issued yellow cards for bad fouls in the first half.
