With the release of iOS 7.0.6 and 6.1.6 by Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) to address a significant SSL security flaw, jailbreak developers have been quick to push out updates for their respective jailbreak tools.
The SSL vulnerability was revealed publicly when Apple pushed its latest updates for affected iPhones, iPads and other iOS devices running iOS 6.x through 7.0.5.
Those that use a non-jailbroken iOS device were simply able to update to the latest version of iOS to close the security hole.
However, those that currently run jailbroken devices had to briefly wait as the jailbreak developers behind Evasi0n 7 and P0sixspwn worked on testing and updating their respective jailbreak software to work properly with iOS 7.0.6 and 6.1.6.
Evasi0n 7 saw an update soon after the release of iOS 7.0.6 after jailbreak software developers found the software update didn’t patch any of the exploits used by Evasi0n. For iOS 6.1.x users, they had to wait a little longer as P0sixspwn was tested with the latest iOS 6 version by its developers: iH8sn0w, Winocm and SquiffyPwn.
Fortunately, support for P0sixspwn 1.4 on iOS 6.1.6 has finally arrived – with some caveats.
Currently, iOS devices such the iPhone 3GS and 4th generation iPod touch will need to be updated to iOS 6.1.6, and then jailbroken using Redsn0w, which will jailbreak the device, but leave it in a “tethered” state.
Launching Cydia and then downloading P0sixspwn 1.4 will then convert the “tethered” jailbreak into an untethered jailbreak, removing the necessity to re-run the Redsn0w jailbreak after a reboot.
Unfortunately this is a bit more of a roundabout way of getting your iOS 6 device untethered. When asked about whether or not the standalone tool for P0sixspwn will see an update, iH8sn0w sent a tweet out affirming that it’s possible, but not the main focus at this time.
In the meantime, those looking to jailbreak their older iPhones and iPod Touches will have to continue to rely on this method of updating and installing P0sixspwn to retain an untethered jailbreak on their older iOS device.
