Hello VGX, goodbye Video Game Awards. Spike has rebranded its annual video game awards show for 2013, offering VGX across several digital platforms and the live stream can be accessed on VGXLive.com, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Twitch, iOS and Android devices as well as Hulu, Yahoo Screen and GameTrailers.
VGX 2013 will be hosted by Joel McHale, "Community," and will feature several debuts and exclusive performance while also handing out awards in 23 different categories. Fans got a chance to vote for "Most Anticipated Game," "Character of the Year" and "Best Mobile Game" while a council of game journalists voted on the other categories. In the "Most Anticipated Game" category the nominees are "Destiny," "Titanfall," "South Park: The Stick of Truth," "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" and "Watch Dogs."
For "Game of the Year," the nominees are "Grand Theft Auto V," "BioShock Infinite," "Super Mario 3D World," "The Last of Us" and "Tomb Raider." The "Studio of the Year" nominees include Irrational Games ("BioShock Infinite"), Naughty Dogs ("The Last of Us,"), Rockstar North ("GTA V") and the Fullbright Company ("Gone Home").
In addition to announcing winners, VGX will include several exclusive performances, reveals and video game debuts. Spike has announced a special musical performance from acts featured on the "GTA V" soundtrack. Matt Parker and Trey Stone, the creators of "South Park" will also be at VGX and will offer a sneak peak at "South Park: the Stick of Truth."
VGX will also debut new content from "Titanfall," "Dying Light," "Tom Clancy's The Division," "Broken Age" and "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt." In addition to new game footage Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime will be on hand to debut a new Wii U game.
According to Casey Patterson, Executive Vice President, Event Production, Talent Development & Studio Relations, Viacom Entertainment Group, the switch to VGX was due to consumer demand, as gamers wanted to see new content and debuts rather than the traditional variety program that accompanies a traditional awards show. "We are stripping away anything that takes time away from world premieres and interviews with the community of game developers that the fans want to hear from," said Patterson in a statement.
VGX 2013 live stream will begin at 6 p.m. EST, 3 p.m. PST. Microsoft's Larry Hryb Tweeted out a handy guide to find out when the show will air in your location.
