Two brilliant strikes handed Chelsea a stunning 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Liverpool on Sunday at Stamford Bridge.
Down 1-0 after Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel’s goal from close range in the the first three minutes of play, Samuel Eto’o and Eden Hazard responded with two goals in the first half to push Chelsea to third on the Premier League table, two points away from first-place Arsenal.
The Blues contained Liverpool goal-scoring machine Luis Suarez throughout the match, holding the Uruguayan to two total shots, with one on target. The loss, coupled with Everton’s earlier 2-1 victory over Southampton, dropped Brendan Rodgers's side to fifth on the table.
It was also Suarez’s first match against Chelsea since his infamous bite of defender Branislav Ivanovic last season.
Hazard provided the equalizer and his ninth goal of the season on a fastbreak in the 17th minute, a curving right-footed strike to the top right corner after a pretty dribble and dish from Oscar.
Eto’o’s fourth goal of the year put Chelsea up for good, after he poked an assist from Oscar past Reds keeper Simon Mignolet in the 34th minute. It was just the sixth goal of the year for a Blues striker.
Suarez could’ve been afforded two penalty kicks after a rough foul by Chelsea defender John Terry and a supposed trip by Eto’o, but the calls were not in Liverpool’s favor.
The Blues were more aggressive throughout the clash, earning four yellow cards, including ones for Terry, Oscar, midfielder David Luiz, and defender Gary Cahill, all coming in second half.
