Cristiano Ronaldo and Angel Di Maria each netted a brace and Real Madrid vanquished FC Copenhagen 4-0 on Wednesday night in Champion’s League Group B play at the Bernabeu.
First-place Madrid picked up another three points in their second victory of the first phase of the UCL, and the midfielder Ronaldo totaled his fourth and fifth goals off of 16 shots thus far in the tournament. All told Los Blancos have 10 goals in two matches, including the 6-1 throttling of Galatasaray.
In the 21st minute and left wide open on the left wing, defender Marcelo sent a high-arcing cross to a lurking Ronaldo, who flew past the Copenhagen back line and headed it past keeper Johan Wiland. Starting his 35th Champion's League match, it was Marcelo’s eighth career assist.
Ronaldo’s second goal came off another header at close range in the 65th minute, and was assisted by Angel Di Maria, his third in the last two UCL matches. Di Maria dribbled past the Lions defense, and lifted it to Ronaldo for a powerful, straight-on header.
Six minutes later Di Maria capped a fast break with his first goal off a left footed shot outside of the box. The Argentine’s second goal came on a near identical play in extra time from Alvaro Morata’s assist.
From the onset Madrid was in control. They ended the first half with shots to four for Copenhagen, and a 63-37 possession advantage.
Midfielder Luka Modric earned a yellow card in the 44th after a rough foul on midfielder Rurik Gislason, who picked up the free kick. Isco later came in for Modric in the 67th minute.
Copenhagen’s Daniel Braathen was also issued a yellow in the 64th, and Adi Fernando came on in relief two minutes later. Midfielder Thomas Delaney pick up his booking with a foul in the 88th on Isco.
The Lions did have limited opportunities, with forward Fernando, and midfielders Christian Bolanos, Domingues De Souza Claudemir, and Youssef Toutouh notching the five total shots on goal.
Madrid keeper Iker Casillas made five saves, upping his career UCL total to 177 in 83 starts since 2001. Wiland finished the match with three saves.
