Should Apple report a decrease in earnings per share for the third quarter, it will mark the fourth consecutive quarter that Apple has reported a year-over-year decline in EPS.
The S&P 500 (INDEXSP: .INX) closed at a record high last week after getting a boost from technology companies, including Microsoft Corporation (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN).
Of the 244 companies that have reported earnings to date for the quarter, 75 percent have reported earnings above estimates, according to FactSet. This percentage is above the average of 73 percent recorded over the past four years. In terms of revenue, 52 percent of companies have reported sales above estimates. This is below the average of 59 percent recorded over the past four years.
In sum, companies are reporting earnings that are 0.8 percent above the mean EPS estimate. This percentage is also well below the average of 6.5 percent over the past four years. If this is the final surprise percentage for the quarter, it will mark the lowest surprise percentage since the fourth quarter of 2008, according to FactSet.

We've highlighted their expected reporting dates and times, along with analysts' earnings-per-share (fully reported) and revenue estimates from Reuters, as well as the stocks' year-to-date performances.
Monday Before Markets Open, or BMO:
Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE: MRK) is a global health care company. The company has a market capitalization of $134.44 billion. It reported that third-quarter profit dropped 35 percent amid competition from generic drug. Company earnings, including one-time items, were 92 cents per share, down from 95 cents a share in the year-ago period. Excluding one-time items, profit fell to $1.12 billion, or 38 cents a share, from $1.73 billion, or 56 cents a share. Merck narrowed its 2013 adjusted per-share earnings guidance to between $3.48 and $3.52, from previous guidance of $3.45 to $3.55. The company expects full-year earnings of between $1.61 and $1.79, from $1.58 to $1.82 previously. Merck is trading at around $45.47 per share, down 2.3 percent from Friday’s closing price.

It is expected to report FY 2013 third-quarter EPS of 51 cents on revenue of $799.11 million, compared with a loss of 42 cents a share on revenue of $685.85 million in the year-ago period. Southwestern Energy is trading at around $36.96 a share. So far this year, the stock has gained 10.8 percent.
Starbucks Corporation (Nasdaq: SBUX) is a roaster, marketer and retailer of specialty coffee in the world. The company has a market capitalization of $59.80 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 fourth-quarter EPS of 60 cents on revenue of $3.81 billion, compared with a profit of 46 cents a share on revenue of $3.36 billion in the year-ago period. Starbucks is trading around $79.54 a share. So far this year, the stock has gained 48.4 percent.

Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) engages in petroleum operations, chemicals operations, mining operations, power generation and energy services. The company has a market capitalization of $233.02 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 third-quarter EPS of $2.83 on revenue of $58.41 billion, compared with a profit of $2.69 a share on revenue of $58.04 billion in the year-ago period. Chevron is trading at around $120.53 a share. So far this year, the stock has gained 11.6 percent.
