It’s official: almost three weeks after canceling their 2013 tour due to an alleged “deep rift within the band”, the Jonas Brothers have announced that they are calling it quits, perhaps for good.
The band, which formed in 2005 and consists of brothers Paul, Joe, and Nick, has recently been plagued by artistic differences. Those differences came to a head earlier this month when the band prematurely cancelled their entire tour just before it kicked off. The tour was supposed to launch on Oct. 11 and would have consisted of 19 shows in cities like Montreal, New York, Denver and Seattle.
Shortly after the cancellation, they de-activated their Twitter account. The band has said that ticket holders will be refunded.
According to their spokesman, Jesse Derris, the brothers haven’t been able to come to a meeting of the minds over what genre of music they should focus on. Derris said the reason for the tour’s cancellation was because "there was a big a disagreement over their music direction."
But tabloid publications like Star and Radar Online reported that the real reason for the cancellation was because of Joe Jonas’ alleged drug habit. Star cited an insider who told the magazine that Joe had “been dealing with substance abuse issues for quite some time,” and that his friends and family “have been begging him to seek help.”
In mid-October TMZ also reported that Joe had been spotted in public with well-known addiction specialist Mike Bayer. Although the pop triumvirate has dismissed the drug rumors –a rep for Joe said “there is no truth or validity to the story” -- they have not said whether the band plans to re-form in the future.
They told People Magazine on Tuesday that “it’s over for now.” “It’s really hard to say ‘forever,’” Nick Jonas, the youngest of the three, told the magazine. “We’re closing a chapter, for sure.”
"I was feeling kind of trapped," he said. "I needed to share my heart with my brothers."
“It was a unanimous decision,” Joe Jonas added.
The news was met with sadness from fans across Twitter on Tuesday.
However, the band will appear on “Good Morning America” on Wednesday at 7 a.m. ET on ABC to address the split.
