Democrat Wendy Davis, who became a national celebrity in June following her 13-hour filibuster against an anti-abortion legislation, has announced she will make a run for governor of Texas.
Davis announced the news in an email to her supporters on Thursday, The Associated Press reported. She will be focusing on education, economic development and health care, the article read.
The Fort Worth Democrat will be challenging front runner Republican state Attorney General Greg Abbott to replace current Gov. Rick Perry, who announced his retirement in July.
Davis faces several challenges, as she is entering the race as the underdog; Abbott has reportedly raised more than $23 million (she has raised more than $1 million); and Texas has not elected a Democratic governor since 1990.
