With 2013 coming to a close, it’s almost time for the Tennis Player of the Year to be announced. Unlike in some years past, the race isn’t a very tight one.
Rafael Nadal is the clear-cut favorite to win the award. After sitting out for seven months with a knee injury, Nadal was the most dominant player on the ATP World Tour by a wide margin.
Nadal’s numbers speak for themselves. He led all competitors by winning 10 titles, which is three ahead of the next player on the list. When he wasn’t winning tournament, the 27-year-old was usually reaching the finals. He failed to reach the last round in only a handful of his 20 tries.
The biggest reason Nadal is the favorite to be named the Player of the Year is his performance in the Grand Slams. Nadal took home the title at the U.S. Open and French Open, making him the only player to win multiple times at the major tournaments in 2013.
Novak Djokovic is the closest thing Nadal has to real competition for the honor. He ended the season with seven wins, including the Australian Open title. Not only do Nadal’s win totals dwarf Djokovis’s, though, he also beat his rival in a few big matches. Nadal topped Djokovic in the Roland Garros semifinals and the finals of the US Open.
Andy Murray will also garner consideration to finish right behind Nadal. He defeated Djokovic at Wimbledon in the Men’s Final. Murray finished fourth in the rankings and ended his season early because of back surgery.
Djokovic won the award the last two years. Nadal was named the winner in 2008 and 2010. He is set to become the fifth player to win Player of the Year at least time. Murray finished fourth in the rankings.
