getdiscountz.blogspot.com ® LG G2 Review: Gorgeous Screen, Nimble Performance Hindered By Poor UX, Awkward Buttons

The LG G2 was introduced in August with much fanfare at its New York City event, and the 5.2-inch flagship has its fair share of features to rave about. The LG G2 packs a lot of good things in a relatively slim form factor, but it is still not perfect. As a precursor for the upcoming Google Nexus 5, however, it is nearly flawless, as the LG G2 turns all of the weaknesses of the Nexus 4 into strengths.

For those not willing or interested in waiting for the newest iteration of Google’s stock Android pet project, the LG G2 is a fine device. The Full HD 1080p screen is truly breathtaking, and LG has fit more screen into the 5.45- by 2.79-inch G2 than any previous iteration from the Korean manufacturer. The LG G2 brings smartphones one step closer towards an edge-to-edge display, and its width fits nicely, even into smaller hands.

The Bad: LG G2

When it comes to ergonomics, the LG G2 introduced the world to the Back Key, which is a unique placement for the power button and volume rocker. Gone are any side buttons, and LG says the Rear Key is more comfortable for hands of all sizes. After all, when holding a phone like the G2, your index finger naturally will linger at the back of the device, the company said at launch.

In truth, the old adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” applies to the Rear Key. There is nothing wrong with side buttons -- the “natural” finger position when holding a smartphone is with fingers and thumb at the sides of the device. With the standard setup, a simple squeeze will turn on a screen or change the volume. The power button on the Rear Key lights up – with different colors. It is a neat trick, if you are looking at the back of the phone while you turn it on, which would be an awkward position for the phone in the first place and is unlikely based on how the phone is setup.

The buttons on the Rear Key are hard to press, and hold the LG G2 back from being a real contender in the smartphone arena. They make volume adjustments from the pocket slightly more possible, but adjusting the LG G2’s volume from the pocket is still no easy task.

A long press on the Rear Key’s volume down button launches the G2’s camera, even if the screen is locked. A long press on the volume up button launches LG’s quick memo app, which we used much less than the camera shortcut. The long-press on the LG G2’s volume up button can also be customized to launch another app, and as Android fans, we are always fond of customization.

The Knock Knock gesture, where a double-tap wakes the screen, is essentially a workaround to the Rear Key. Since the power button is on the rear, how do you wake up the phone if it is lying flat on a surface? Two taps on the screen are supposed to do it, and much of the time, they do. Unfortunately, Knock Knock does not work on every attempt. I realized that a lighter knock works better than a harder one, but even when applied with gentleness the double-tap gesture fails to work every time.

The Good: LG G2

The LG G2 is quick to navigate thanks to the Snapdragon 800 processor clocked to 2.26 GHz and 2 GB of RAM. LG’s user experience (UX) is also relatively easy to navigate. At the bottom of the screen, the LG G2 features a back button followed by home, and rather than offering the “recent window” button, has three lines that represent a right-click of sorts, bringing up a menu of offerings.

This is one of the many examples where LG’s UX falls flat. There are many, and the UX is complicated, but so rather than list them all here, I will just say that thankfully, most of the truly irritating features and be changed, as LG has included quite a few options and settings in the G2.

The camera on the LG G2 is great, and the optical image stabilization, or OIS, works well. The sound quality is excellent, but not as good as the HTC One, and the inclusion of the Vienna Boys Choir is off-putting, to say the least. The Boys Choir-backed ringtones are charming, in kind of a creepy way, and do not add to the value of the phone.

The form-factor of the G2 is easier to handle than the sharper radius of angles found in Samsung’s Galaxy Note series, and reminiscent of the LG Nexus 4 from the front. In addition to the Rear Key, the rear of the phone has a glossy rear cover, which is a fingerprint magnet on both the regular and Verizon Wireless variant of the LG G2.

Wireless charging is an exclusive to the Verizon version of the LG G2, as is a metallic Rear Key. In addition to the silvery paint job, the Rear Key on Verizon’s G2 is completely flat. This is opposed to the standard Rear Key projects from the G2, and is surrounded by a plastic barrier to prevent accidental presses.

I can pretend to understand why Verizon gets wireless charging and other carriers do not (even though consumers will pay the same price). However, the redesigned Rear Key is truly a mystery to me. I have to say, the standard Rear Key is better than the Verizon variant. While still offering some resistance, the keys are easier to press than on the Verizon G2.

The Bottom Line: LG G2

All in all, I wanted to like the LG G2. I love my Nexus 4, and I had hoped that the G2 would be a phabletized precursor for the Nexus 5. If you look at it that way, the G2 is a success. The speakers are worlds better than the Nexus 4’s, as is the incredible screen. However, the Rear Key is an unnecessary feature that drags down the overall quality of the LG G2, almost as much as the awkward and ineffective UX. The battery life is great on the G2, and it better be, as the phone packs a 3,000 mAh battery that fattens up the form factor.

If you are in the market for a fantastic new smartphone from LG, I would suggest you at least wait and see until the Nexus 5 is introduced -- rumors are swirling Google will announce the next device along with Android 4.4 Kit Kat sometime around Oct. 14.

Government Shutdown 2013: Why Are US Stocks Gaining? [VIDEO] getdiscountz.blogspot.com

getdiscountz.blogspot.com ® Government Shutdown 2013: Why Are US Stocks Gaining? [VIDEO]

Wall Street climbed on Tuesday, despite the U.S. government shutdown, leaving some scratching their heads as to why stocks continue to gain in light of the fiscal crisis in Washington?

“I think to some it is surprising, but we have to just look at the circumstances where we’re at,” said Jonathan Corpina, senior managing partner with Meridian Equity Partners Inc. from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. “This government shutdown, there are two sides to it. The people thinking that it was going to occur and people that were thinking it wasn’t going to occur; but, either way, people were positioned accordingly yesterday. So coming into today, it’s a new month. It’s a new quarter. There’s been a lot of funds out there that have been waiting to put money back into this market and they have to wait till the quarter starts again. So we’re starting to see now some older money that’s been off the table coming back into this market.”

U.S. stocks extended their gains on the first trading day of the month and quarter, as nearly one million government workers were temporarily out of work on Tuesday as the U.S. government partially shut down for the first time since late 1995 and early 1996. A healthcare deadlock persists between President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans over The Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare.

“Yes, it is concerning. I personally did not think it was going to get to this point. I thought there was going to be some resolution put in place, but obviously this October 17 is the next big date that’s out there and I think that’s the data that people are starting to focus on now.”

Not only is Congress dealing with the government shutdown, but lawmakers will also have to deal with the debt ceiling crisis later this month. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew announced on September 25 the U.S. Treasury will run out of borrowed money by October 17, unless Congress raises the $16.7 trillion debt limit.

Also due to the shutdown, the highly-anticipated jobs report for the month of September will likely now be delayed. As for the Federal Reserve’s tapering dilemma, Bernanke reiterated in a press conference after the Federal Open Market Committee’s (FOMC) September 17-18 meeting "The economic data does not yet provide sufficient confirmation" to warrant reducing the central bank’s $85 billion-a-month bond-buying program.

“We’re going to get some information out of the Fed I believe next Wednesday,” said Corpina. “Without this information that’s coming out Thursday and Friday this week, I think the Fed really can’t do much, they can’t say much. Even if we were getting our normal calendar of economic data, considering the fact that we didn’t taper, it would be too soon to get a really big statement coming out of Washington out of this meeting.”

The U.S. Department of Labor’s non-farm payroll report is arguably the most closely watched economic data point in the U.S. economy, as the monthly report includes the unemployment rate and the number of jobs added to the economy by employers. The U.S. economy added 169,000 jobs in August, while the unemployment rate ticked down to 7.3 percent, according to the Labor Department.

“What I’m curious to see is if we don’t get this data on Thursday and Friday, when do we get it and how do we get it,” added Corpina.

In afternoon trading, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 54.36 points, or 0.36 percent, at 15,184.03. The S&P 500 was up 10.94 points, or 0.65 percent, at 1,692.44. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 34.54 points, or 0.92 percent, at 3,805.88.

“How I Met Your Mother” continued on Monday as its final season chronicles the events surrounding Barney Stintson’s (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin Scherbatsky’s (Cobie Smulders) wedding. Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan) discovers Ted Mosby’s (Josh Radnor) “leaving New York City” bucket list and confronts him over the fact that she’s the only one that knows about his plans to leave New York. Meanwhile, Lily’s husband, Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel) is making his way to Far Hampton by truck, passing through Wisconsin in the process. Back at the resort venue, Barney and Robin are hiding from their old relatives, who they liken to the walking dead. Take a look at GIFs from Season 9 Episode 3, titled “Last Time in New York,” here.

Marshall and Ted re-enact a swordfight from “The Princess Bride,” destroying Lily’s dress in the process.

After hearing the fate of her dress, the unseen Linus returns to refill Lily’s gin and tonic.

As punishment for the destruction of her dress, Lily forces Ted to wear a ridiculous outfit.

Marshall, a die-hard Minnesota Vikings fan is remotely punished by Lily, by being forced to wear a Wisconsin cheesehead hat and Green Bay Packers clothes.

Robin and Barney hide in the ice machine room to get away from their older relatives only to find Barney’s brother James Stintson (Wayne Brady) hiding there as well.

It turns out, Lily and Robin had a similar situation happen with swords as well.

Lily and Robin mock Ted's and Marshall's swords, only to get into full blown swordfight.

Robin accidentally destroys a 60-year-old bottle of Glen McKenna scotch that Ted was saving for the wedding.

Lily and Robin hide this fact using a mixture of the remainder of the Glen McKenna scotch, cheaper alcohol, chocolate syrup, ketchup and hand sanitizer.

James sacrifices himself to the older relatives.

He gets “devoured” by their endless questions while Barney and Robin escape.

Robin accidentally reveals what happened to the bottle of Glen McKenna to Ted.

He looks at his glass claiming he knew something was wrong, even though moments before he was claiming it was the best scotch he had ever tasted.

Marshall angrily takes off his cheesehead hat after discovering what happened to the Glen McKenna scotch.

The Green Bay Packers fans surrounding him don’t approve and he cautiously puts it back on.

Bill Nye The Science Guy Exits 'Dancing With The Stars,' But There's Plenty Of Other Scientists Who Can Get Funky [VIDEOS] getdiscountz.blogspot.com

getdiscountz.blogspot.com ® Bill Nye The Science Guy Exits 'Dancing With The Stars,' But There's Plenty Of Other Scientists Who Can Get Funky [VIDEOS]

Bill Nye the Science Guy may have danced his way into our hearts, but he won’t be bringing home the big prize on “Dancing With the Stars.” After injuring his leg in a previous routine, Nye gamely tried to rebound with a funky robot performance to a Daft Punk hit -- but to no avail.

On their first night before the cameras, Nye and professional dancer Tyne Stecklein performed a cha-cha routine that began with the Science Guy bringing his dancing partner to life on a laboratory set:

The judges weren’t enthused, however. But the real trouble trouble arose during last week’s paso doble routine. While performing the Spanish dance in a Beethoven getup, the Science Guy took a tumble (you can see it at about 2:48 in the video below):

A checkup at the doctor’s office revealed that Nye had torn his quadriceps tendon, which runs along the leg from thigh to knee. Doctor’s orders: no dancing!

Nye and Stecklein attempted to work around his injured leg with a science-fiction inspired robot routine, which sadly couldn’t keep them in the game:

"What breaks my heart is Tyne [has to go home]," Nye said after elimination, according to People. "She's fantastic."

If you’re disappointed that your weekly TV fix won’t be supplying as many science-themed dances in the future, there are alternatives! John Bohannon, a correspondent for the journal Science, has challenged scientists to interpret their research through dance in yearly contests since 2008. (If you're a scientist, you still have until Oct. 21 to enter this year's contest!)

Some tidbits from last year’s “Dance Your Ph.D” entries include an offering from University of Illinois at Chicago graduate student Carrie Seltzer, who examines how seeds get dispersed from trees in the Tanzanian rain forest. In her routine, a dancer in a rat costume leads some seeds through their steps:

Last year’s winner in the chemistry section was Peter Liddicoat at the University of Sydney in Australia, who turned his quest to build super-strong alloys into a burlesque performance complete with unicycling, juggling, and dancing:

Brown University mathematician Diana Davis took last year’s top prize in physics (since there’s no separate math category) for her video, which explores “geodesic flow on regular polygons.” According to an interview with Science, the mathematics involved in Davis’ work describe a system kind of like a pool table with no friction, where the ball keeps bouncing off of walls forever. The same math also may have applications in a cosmological theory that hypothesizes our universe is shaped like a three-dimensional torus (a doughnut, basically).

To further slake your science dancing thirst, there’s also this classic 1971 video put together by Stanford University chemist Robert Weiss, who marshaled a horde of college students to recreate the process of protein synthesis:

The latest videos to be released, “Bullhorn” and “Minotaur,” hit the “American Horror Story” YouTube page on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

“Never lock horns with the Coven,” teases he nine-second-long teaser video for “Bullhorn.” With the same eerie music that plays during the opening credits, a woman appears with a horn sticking out of her mouth … but in a flash, it’s gone.

In “Minotaur,” a man wraps his hand around the shoulder of a woman … but something is off. Instead of having five fingers, the hand has two human fingers and part of a hoof. “The Coven’s wrath requires the perfect combination,” explains the caption of the 11-second “Coven” video.

“Bullhorn and “Minotaur” come a day after “American Horror Story” released two more chilling videos from the witch school – “Black Hat” and “The Stand.”

“Our wile has style,” reads the caption for “Black Hat.” The teaser video shows a large group of girls walking in their black and white uniforms and heels while wearing their signature black hat.

Meanwhile in, “The Stand,” a set of desks sit empty as the sound of someone writing on a chalkboard breaks the silence. But in a flash the desks are no longer empty, and instead are being stepped on by multiple sets of signature black heels that the “Coven” witches seem to wear. “We’re always one step ahead,” the caption teases.

“American Horror Story: Coven” will premiere on FX on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 10 p.m. What do you think of the season 3 teaser videos? Let us know in the comments section.

MLB News: Rays’ David Price Masterful In One-Game Playoff Over Rangers [2013 AL Playoffs] getdiscountz.blogspot.com

getdiscountz.blogspot.com ® MLB News: Rays’ David Price Masterful In One-Game Playoff Over Rangers [2013 AL Playoffs]

In a memorable wild-card tiebreaker, David Price showed why he is still among the best starting pitchers in the American League, as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on Monday behind his complete game, 5-2.

Price grew stronger as the game progressed to go the distance for his tenth win of the season. The southpaw conceded just seven hits and one walk in nine innings against a Rangers squad that finished seventh in the Majors in runs against left-handers. Price also picked off baserunners Elvis Andrus and Ian Kinsler in the early innings.

"This was pretty special," said Price, who threw 118 pitches for his fourth complete game of the season. The reigning Cy Young winner added that he appreciated the confidence that manager Joe Maddon had in him to go nine innings.

After the final pitch, Price looked directly at third baseman Evan Longoria in celebration and appreciation, as opposed to his catcher, which is customary for a pitcher.

"He just told me that he had a dream about it," Longoria said. "It was awesome to feel that emotion from him. That's what an ace does; that's what a leader of a staff does. It was awesome to watch."

The effort from Price was the fifth straight time he has conceded two earned runs in an outing. He finished September with a 3.40 earned-run average, and a 3.33 ERA for the season.

It was an important way for Price to finish off the season, as he will almost certainly miss out on repeating as the American League Cy Young winner. The Detroit Tigers’ Anibal Sanchez and Max Scherzer are favorites, along with the Seattle Mariners’ Hisashi Iwakum and the Rangers’ Yu Darvish.

The Rays will face the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday at Progressive Field in the one-game wild-card game. Alex Cobb will start for the Rays against the Indians’ Danny Salazar.

'Game Of Thrones' Season 4 Spoilers: The 'Purple Wedding' Will Make Fans Forget About 'The Red Wedding' getdiscountz.blogspot.com

getdiscountz.blogspot.com ® 'Game Of Thrones' Season 4 Spoilers: The 'Purple Wedding' Will Make Fans Forget About 'The Red Wedding'

"Game of Thrones" spoilers are beginning to surface, and the source is none other than series author George R.R. Martin. Following the tragic "Red Wedding" in the third season, the "Purple Wedding" will continue the trend of eventful nuptials.

Be advised: Full "Game of Thrones" spoilers ahead.

Wedding bells are ringing again in "Game of Thrones," and that's usually a sign of big changes to come. In the third season of "Game of Thrones," the much anticipated "Red Wedding" did not disappoint, shocking fans who had only watched the HBO series while those who had read the book could finally discuss the deaths of Robb Stark, his wife, Catleyn Stark and thousands of his soldiers. The betrayal led by Lord Walder Frey, with the help of Tywin Lannister, dramatically altered "Game of Thrones," and while winter is still coming, the fourth season will naturally deal with the fallout from the tragic wedding.

Speaking to TV Guide, Martin discussed the upcoming wedding of Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) and Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer). Martin said, "It's going to be the wedding of the year, and as memorable in its own way as our wedding last season." Martin notes the Purple Wedding was dubbed such by fans as the wine served at the feast will play a pivotal role in setting up some crucial scenes. Martin also revealed that the wedding itself will be an extravagant affair, featuring a rose-inspired dress, 77 different courses and "some wonderful halftime entertainment," said Martin to TV Guide.

Of course, Martin is referring to the poisoned wine that leads to the death of Joffrey. While it is not immediately clear who actually poisoned Joffrey during the wedding, the blame naturally falls on Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) and Sansa Stark, who are quickly accused of murdering the king. During the feast, Joffrey is embarrassed by his uncle after Tyrion refuses to partake in some of the festivities. Joffrey humiliates Tyrion and forces him to be his cupbearer for the rest of the night, making him a likely suspect, while Sansa, Tyrion's wife and daughter of the "traitor" Eddard Stark, is another easy target.

"Game of Thrones" will return for its fourth season on HBO during the spring of 2014. Prior to the season premiere, there have been plenty of developments, including the casting of the Red Viper, Oberyn Martell.
