Prior to the start of the 2013 NFL season, no team had worse odds to win the Super Bowl than the Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars. At least one of them will end Sunday with a .500 record as they are set to face off in Week 2.
As expected, both teams are entering the contest winless. They did, however, lose in two very different fashions.
Not surprisingly, the Jaguars had the worst performance in Week 1. They were unable to muster anything on offense, failing to put up any touchdowns or field goals. They lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 28-2, registering their only points on a safety.
Oakland, however, was very competitive. They lost by four points to the Colts, but had a chance to win in the closing seconds. Terrelle Prior led the Raiders to the Colt’s eight-yard line, but eventually threw an interception to end the Raiders chances.
Despite the loss, the Raiders saw some encouraging signs last week. They almost picked up a road win against a playoff team from 2012, and their quarterback played surprisingly well. Matt Flynn seemed to have a stranglehold on the starting job in training camp, but head coach Dennis Allen decided to go with Pryor. The move was, reportedly, a controversial one in the organization, but the Ohio State product held his own against Andrew Luck. Pryor had a 70.6 passer rating, but was extremely effective on the ground, accumulating 112 yards on 13 rushes.
The Jaguars didn’t leave Week 1 feeling great about their young quarterback. On 35 pass attempts, Blaine Gabbert threw for 121 yards and two interceptions. He won’t get a chance to redeem himself in Week 2 after leaving the contest late with a laceration in his hand. Chad Henne will get the call instead. He went three-for-six in relief against the Chiefs,
Sunday will likely mark one of the few times that the Raiders are favored this season. They are giving the visiting Jaguars 4.5 points.
