Pet owners beware. The Nestlé Purina PetCare Company announced a voluntary recall of one of its popular pet food products this week after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported a possible salmonella contamination.

In a press release from the Missouri-based company via the FDA Friday, pet owners were warned against a possible salmonella risk from Purina ONE BeyOnd, White Meat Chicken & Whole Barley Recipe Adult Dry Dog Food. According to the announcement, only one shipment of the product sold in the United States is affected by the voluntary recall. The products found to contain salmonella was found in UPC code 17800 12679, includes a production code of 31071083, a “best by” date of October 2014 and was sold in a 3.5 lb. bag.

Consumers with affected products are advised to immediately discard the pet food due to the possible salmonella contamination, which can be harmful to both animals and their owners. “People handling contaminated dry pet food can become infected with salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product,” said the Purina statement. Those in contact with recalled products are advised to be on the lookout for symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever. According to Nestle, no “salmonella-related” illnesses from the product have been reported. Other pet food products produced by the company have not been included in the recall.

“At Nestlé Purina PetCare, the safety and efficacy of our products are our top priority,” said the company. “We apologize for any inconvenience due to this voluntary recall.” Customers can contact the company for a refund by calling: 1-800-473-8546.

Nestlé Purina PetCare Company last issued a voluntary recall in January, for their Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch brand dog treats, after discovering traces of antibiotic residue in the pet food products. The company announced in a press release that the treats would be pulled the U.S. until further notice despite claiming the finding posed no safety risk to animals.

Nestlé Purina PetCare is a division of the Swiss conglomerate Nestlé (SIX:NESN), which purchased Ralston Purina in 2001.
