Ross Barkley provided a dramatic, stunning free kick goal in the 84th minute to lift Everton to a 2-1 victory over Swansea, and placed the club in fourth on the Premier League table on Sunday afternoon at Liberty Stadium.
The Toffees originally held a 1-0 advantage after a powerful strike from Seamus Coleman from the right side of the box in the 66th minute, but defender Bryan Oviedo was charged with an own goal in the 70th and kept Swansea’s hopes alive.
For his third goal of the season, Barkley broke the tie with a right footed shot outside just above Swansea’s box, and Everton are now a point behind Arsenal and Manchester City. Though Toffees will have to tick up their offensive output in order to catch City in goal differential.
Swansea are stuck in 11th place with a dead even goal differential and are winless in their last three matches.
Both keepers were tested throughout the match, as Everton’s Tim Howard came up with three saves and Gerhard Tremmel recorded four saves off six Toffee shots on target.
Everton kept up the pressure throughout the match, generating eight corner kicks, despite a 55-45 possession advantage in Swansea’s favor.
