Now that Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Green Monday have passed, the next retail holiday is Free Shipping Day on Wednesday, Dec. 18 when more than 800 retailers will offer free shipping with no minimum purchase required – as well as guaranteed delivery by Christmas Eve.
Countless retailers are offering special deals, discounts and free shipping in honor of the online retail holiday on Wednesday with majority of merchants boasting Christmas Eve delivery guaranteed. The website that started it all, FreeShippingDay.com, has a growing list of over 800 stores that will participate in the e-commerce holiday, including JCPenney, Express, Kay Jewelers, American Eagle and Radio Shack, among others.
According to the site, Free Shipping Day was conceptualized by Luke Knowles and his wife, who own the year-round free shipping informational site, FreeShipping.org. Knowles said he believed “merchants would relish the opportunity to extend the online holiday shopping season, which is fast becoming the preferred mode of buying for those who dread crowded malls and rain checks.”
Plus, according to statistics, 90 percent of consumers spend more when offered free shipping while nearly half will abandon their carts if faced with high delivery fees.
So, in just two weeks, Knowles created the shopping holiday, which happens towards the end of the shopping season to give online buyers a last chance for yuletide savings with a guaranteed Christmas delivery. With unprecedented growth, Free Shipping Day garnered more than $1 billion in online sales in 2011 and has even gone international, extending into Canada.
Now in its sixth year, Free Shipping Day “is regarded as a premiere shopping holiday” with more participating stores than ever before. And according to its creators, “consumers have made their intentions clear: Like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Free Shipping Day is here to stay.
While the list of stores participating is lengthy – with 816 merchants as of Tuesday morning – some notable retailers are missing from the list. Instead, these major shopping destinations like Best Buy, Amazon and Macy’s will offer their own special free shipping deals ahead of Christmas.
Best Buy will offer free standard shipping for all orders made online until 3 p.m. EST on Friday, Dec. 20 and express shipping (two business days) through 1 p.m. EST on Sunday, Dec. 22. Customers who order online by 4 p.m. local time on Christmas Eve can pick up items in stores that day.
Macy’s will offer free standard shipping with guaranteed Christmas Eve delivery for in-stock merchandise for orders placed by 11:59 p.m. EST on Saturday, Dec. 21. Walmart’s free shipping cutoff in order for parcels to arrive by Dec. 24 is on Thursday, Dec. 19, but customers can order online and pick up in stores through Monday, Dec. 23.
Express shipping of in-stock merchandise from Macy’s closes at 2 p.m. PST on Sunday. Nordstrom is offering free standard shipping on all merchandise and gift cards through 8 p.m. PST on Saturday.
Amazon.com is offering free shipping for orders of $35 or more with a deadline of Wednesday, Dec. 18. Target will guarantee Christmas delivery for customers who use Seasonal Shipping through Dec. 19.
