Charlie Hunnam won’t be in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” film, but according to reports, fan favorites Matt Bomer and Ian Somerhalder aren’t contenders either. The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Alexander Skarsgard of “True Blood” and Jamie Doran of “The Fall” are rumored to be in the running, sources told the news site.
Skarsgard, 37, has been briefly tossed around among fans as a possible contender, but not many have said they would be eager to see Doran, 31, in the coveted role. THR added Theo James and Christian Cooke are also possible choices for the lead in the highly anticipated film; a BDSM thriller about when a wealthy Seattle businessman falls in love with a college student.
There was a rumor the “Sons of Anarchy” star left the project because of the script Kelly Marcel wrote for “Fifty Shades of Grey,” THR wrote, but before Hunnam, 33, left the film on Saturday, Universal/Focus hired Patrick Marber to polish the script and characters. Marber is an Oscar-nominated screenwriter who has worked on “Closer” and “Notes of a Scandal,” THR said. He also wrote “Love You More,” a short film which was subsequently directed by “Fifty Shades of Grey’s” Sam Johnson-Taylor.
There are various rumors about why Hunnam dropped out. One is that he reportedly quit the film because he didn’t want to end up like Robert Pattinson, the star of “Twilight” and E.L. James’ supposed first choice to play Christian Grey. He supposedly quit the project because he didn't want to be typecast," a source told People magazine on Monday. “He didn't want the Robert Pattinson-esque attention that would come along with taking on this role."
But according to Universal Pictures, Hunnam dropped out of the role because of prior engagements.
"The filmmakers of 'Fifty Shades of Grey' and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam's immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey," the studio said in a statement.
