The witching hour is almost upon us, as Halloween is almost here, so if this year you don’t feel like partying or trick or treating we have the top four highest grossing horror movies, adjusted for inflation, of all time to get your horror fix right from the comfort of your own home…..

Coming in at number four on the list is The Ring which was released in 2002. The film, starring Naomi Watts, grossed over $129 million in domestic sales!!! The psychological horror will have you dangling on the edge of your chair as audiences are left to watch what happens to all the people who come in contact with a mysterious, cursed video tape.

At number 3 is a film you all probably remember, the 2000 film, Scream which made over $104 million in domestic sales at the box office. If you love slasher films with a hint of comedy then this is the film for you with an all-star cast including Naomi Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette. The movie gained cult like status and released three other sequels, scream 2, 3 and 4.

With a $600,000 film budget The Blair Witch Project blew away audiences with its terrifying ‘documentary’ style film. Making over $140 million domestically this film made you question what was real, and what was fake. Without showing too much, this film struck the perfect balance of realism and the supernatural- without even showing too much. Many were left to wonder what happened to the film makers that went into the woods looking for a witch. Many thought the film was actually a documentary.

Coming in at the top is the 2001 classic starring Anthony Hopkins, ‘Hannibal’, which brought in over $165 million in domestic ticket sales. Hopkins delivered a performance of a lifetime and became an icon for his portrayal of the cannibal monster, Hannibal Lector…

Hannibal was the sequel to the Oscar winning film, silence of the Lambs, both of which were directed by Ridley Scott. Upon its release the film broke box office records in the United States, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Not making the cut in terms of ticket sales, popularity or critical praise, is my all-time favorite movie- Hocus Pocus:Starring Bette Midler, for me this film encompasses everything that Halloween represents- witches, the supernatural, and of course a sprinkling of comedy. Happy Halloween!
