A female model whose career was winding down experienced a resurgence when she began posing as a male model.

According to the New York Post, Elliott Sailors was a blonde-haired beauty with Ford modeling agency when, at the ripe (in modeling years) old age of 31, she decided to cut off her hair, wrap her breasts and reinvent herself as a man in the competitive fashion industry.

“I’m starting over to have a longer career,” Sailors told the Post. “Men don’t need to look as young as possible, so I have a lot of time.”

Sailors, a former beauty pageant contestant from Tucson, Ariz., told the Post that starting over as a male model was a no-brainer, simply because “earlier on in my career, I would get frustrated because I thought I looked too masculine. I have a strong jaw, wide forehead, huge eyebrows. I thought I looked like a man wearing makeup.”

Sailors -- whose first name, Elliott, is her mother’s maiden name -- is married to a man named Adam Santos-Coy, who supported her decision. “He said he knew people would see me differently once I did it, but he didn’t realize how much people would see him differently,” she said, telling the Post that many who encounter the duo think they are a gay couple.

Sailors’ Twitter profile, with a bio that reads: “Model... More than just a girl...”contains photos of the model in hoodies, flannel and ripped jeans, as well as references to the Decatur and Sons barber shop in Chelsea, where she gets her hair cut.

Sailors isn’t the first woman to make the jump to male modeling. As the Daily Mail points out, Casey Fengler, 35, is the first woman to be signed exclusively to a contract for male modeling jobs.

Meanwhile, Sailors tells the Post that she walks around dressed as a man most days, because it’s easier than wearing makeup or walking in heels. She’s also noticed that men don’t open the door for her anymore. “When I’m in an elevator, I notice that they let all of the girls go first — like the real girls,” she said.
