The Los Angeles Lakers continue to make additions to their roster before the start of training camp. On Thursday, the team announced the signing of Xavier Henry.
Henry was drafted No.12 overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2010. After a disappointing rookie campaign, he spent two years with the then-New Orleans Hornets. In 2012-2013, he averaged 3.9 points and 1.8 rebounds per game on 41 percent field goal shooting.
With Kobe Bryant’s status for the upcoming season uncertain, the Lakers are in need of depth at shooting guard. Free agent Nick Young joined the Lakers this offseason, but Henry still has a chance to make the roster.
There have also been rumors that the Lakers might be interested in Sebastian Telfair. Sam Amico of Fox Sports reported that the Lakers, Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs have explored the possibility of signing the veteran.
The point guard, who has bounced around the NBA for nine years, remains without a team. He played for both the Toronto Raptors and Phoenix Suns last season, averaging 5.6 points and 2.6 assists per contests.
Last year, the Lakers were expected to have their best point guard play since Magic Johnson retired. However, Steve Nash got hurt for a large portion of the year and saw his numbers decline when healthy. Backup Steve Blake missed 37 games, and Chris Duhon and Darius Morris, who is still with the club, struggled when they were given the bulk of the minutes.
L.A. failed to make any major acquisitions this offseason. They lost Dwight Howard to the Houston Rockets, and signed a few marginal players to short-term deals, hoping to have a lot of salary cap space in the summer of 2014. The organization will, reportedly, target top free agents like LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony.
Wesley Johnson and Chris Kaman will make their debuts with the Lakers in the upcoming season. Jordan Farmar is back for the second time in his career.
The Lakers are scheduled to begin training on Sept.27. Other than Williams and Henry, Marcus Landry, Elias Harris and Ryan Kelly will be battling for a roster spot.
