A police-involved shooting in Irvine, Calif., Tuesday led to the hospitalization of 35-year-old suspect Ronald Williams, who was shot as police were serving him with a search warrant as part of an investigation into lewd conduct.
Williams was shot by a police detective at the Doria Homes apartment complex in Irvine around 10:40 a.m. local time Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times reported. No officers were injured in the incident, Irvine Police Department Sgt. Scott McClellan told the paper.
It was unclear what led to the shooting, but one witness said Williams did not fire at the officers.
"He didn't pull out no gun. I'm telling you, I didn't see no gun," Lisa Henry told KABC.
But police said a handgun was recovered at the scene of the police-involved shooting and fake gun was found in the pocket of a car door. It was unclear whether the car belonged to Williams.
Williams’ condition was not released at the time of the incident, but Irvine police described the suspect as “alert and talking” when he was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries.
Irvine police contacted Williams in the parking lot of the housing complex and were there to serve a search warrant related to a lewd conduct case. Williams was arrested on suspicion of sexual conduct with a child 14 or younger, KTLA reported.
