A 107-year-old Arkansas man was killed in a shootout with a SWAT team on Saturday afternoon. According to KTHV 11 in Little Rock, police arrived at the residence of Monroe Isadore in Pine Bluff to investigate a domestic-violence case. Police on the scene determined that Isadore had assaulted two other people in the house. Officers asked that the two other people leave the residence for their safety and moved to approach Isadore, who was alone in a bedroom.
As police approached the bedroom door and announced themselves, Isadore shot through the door at the officers, the television station reported. Nobody was harmed by the gunfire, but police moved to a safer area outside the house and called for backup. Negotiators attempted to talk Isadore into surrendering peacefully for several hours until a SWAT team arrived on the scene.
SWAT officers positioned a camera inside Isadore’s bedroom and verified he was alone and armed with a handgun, KTHV 11 said. In hopes of forcing Isadore to surrender, the SWAT team moved in and began pumping a gas into the bedroom through a window. Isadore promptly began shooting at SWAT officers. Again, nobody was harmed by the gunfire.
At this point, an entry team went into the residence and threw a distraction device into the bedroom. Isadore began shooting at the SWAT team. Officers then returned fire, shooting and killing Isadore. According to the Pine Bluff Commercial, Isadore was pronounced dead around 7:23 p.m. local time, about three hours after police first arrived on scene.
Despite Pine Bluff’s small size, the town of 50,000 residents is one of the most dangerous places in the U.S. Only Detroit and its outlying areas have a higher rate of violent crime per capita. As the U.K.’s Independent noted in an in-depth profile, the town saw 18 murders last year, a staggering number for such a small metropolitan area.
