Texas state Senator and lieutenant governor candidate Dan Patrick (R) made the most embarrassing Twitter typo of the day when he inadvertently claimed that marriage should only be between two men.
Patrick was presumably so mad that he couldn’t type straight, as hours earlier a federal judge ruled Texas’ ban on gay marriage unconstitutional. On Wednesday, San Antonio-based federal judge Orlando Garcia ruled that “Texas’ prohibition on same-sex marriage conflicts with the United States Constitution’s guarantees of equal protection and due process” and declared the ban unconstitutional.
“Texas’ current marriage laws deny homosexual couples the right to marry, and in doing so, demean their dignity for no legitimate reason," Garcia added. "Accordingly, the Court finds these laws are unconstitutional and hereby grants a preliminary injunction enjoining Defendants from enforcing Texas’ bans on same-sex marriage.”
Patrick, a Republican who has vowed to defend “traditional Texas values” quickly deleted his tweet accidentally voicing support for same-sex marriage (at least between two men), but the damage had already been done. Screencaps of Patricks’ message of solidarity spread like wildfire across Twitter.
Still, that didn’t stop Patrick from performing a little damage control after his typo went viral. He says he’s now in the market for a social media intern to prevent him from accidentally endorsing progressive views in the future.
