Liverpool and manager Brendan Rodgers believed their savior was going to be in the form of Basel scoring forward Mohamed Salah, but now it appears the Reds will need to continue their search for a splash January signing.
News quickly spread that Chelsea had swooped in at the last minute with a reported £11 million offer to land the 21-year-old Egyptian winger, which quickly deflated Liverpool’s chances of rising above fourth on the Premier League table.
Salah has already catapulted Basel to the top of the Swiss Super League, and he’s netted 17 goals in 27 appearances with Egypt’s first team.
While it’s unclear if Liverpool can salvage the transfer sessions now that Salah is off the market, but the Reds may be exploring other options to bolster the squad.
According to Express the Reds may have rekindled their interest in Spartak Moscow midfielder Romulo Monteiro, a 23-year-old Brazilian with solid defensive skills that could make up for the loss of Lucas Leiva.
Leiva went down with a knee injury during last week’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa, and though the worst was feared, the Brazilian downplayed his recovery time via Twitter, stating he’ll return in a few weeks, according to Daily Mirror.
Still Monteiro could provide much needed depth along the backline, or act as insurance should Levia’s positive diagnosis go awry. There could be an issue with Monteiro’s work permit, but his price tag is an affordable £6 million and it could be enough to scare the other suitors in Chelsea, Arsenal, and Barcelona.
Another option, albeit long-term, could be Fulham forward Muamer Tankovic. As reported by The Sun, the Reds have watched the 18-year-old Swede’s development, and could pounce when his contract is up at the conclusion of the season.
Tankovic hasn’t reached the EPL pitch for Fulham yet, but has netted 14 combined goals in 31 matches for Sweden’s under-18 and under-17 squads.
