Thank you, President Clinton, for your kind words. It was an honor to serve in your administration, and we’re all honored by your presence. I have to note that, over 20 years ago, when a conservative philosophy seemed dominant, you broke through – and told us to still believe in a place called Hope.

Thank you, Secretary Clinton. I was inspired by the time I spent on your first campaign. Your groundbreaking commitment to nurturing our children and families manifested itself in a phrase that is now a part of our American culture – and something we believe in deeply in this city. It Takes a Village.

Thank you, Rev. Fred Lucas Jr., Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, Monsignor Robert Romano, and Imam Askia Muhammad for your words of prayer.

Thank you, Governor Cuomo. Working with you at HUD, I saw how big ideas can overcome big obstacles. And it will be my honor to serve shoulder-to-shoulder with you again.

Thank you, Mayor Bloomberg. To say the least, you led our city through some extremely difficult times. And for that, we are all grateful. Your passion on issues such as environmental protection and public health has built a noble legacy. We pledge today to continue that great progress you made in these critically important areas. Thank you, Mayor Bloomberg.

Thank you, Mayor Dinkins, for starting us on the road to a safer city, and for always uplifting our young people – and I must say personally, for giving me my start in New York City government. Thank you. And Mayor Dinkins, you also had the wisdom to hire a strong and beautiful young woman who walked up to me one day in City Hall and changed my life forever.

Chirlane, you are my soul mate — and my best friend. And my partner in all I do. My love for you grows with each passing year. Chiara and Dante, I cannot put into words the joy and the pride that you bring your mother and me every day. You are the best thing that’s ever happened to us, and we love you so much.

And finally, thank you to my brothers Steve and Don, and all my family assembled here today — from all around this country, and from Italy. You have always guided and sustained me. Grazie.

Thank you, my fellow New Yorkers — my brothers and sisters — for joining Chirlane, Chiara, Dante and me on this chilly winter day. And we thank you for your fortitude.

De parte de Chirlane, Chiara, Dante y yo, les extiendo las gracias a ustedes, mis hermanas y hermanos niuyorquinos, por acompaƱarnos en este dia tan especial.

Like it is for so many of you, my family is my rock. Their wisdom, their compassion, and their sense of humor make each day a gift to cherish.

But, what makes today so special isn’t just my family, but our larger New York family. Yes I am borrowing from Governor Cuomo, our family of New York. We see what binds all New Yorkers together: an understanding that big dreams are not a luxury reserved for a privileged few, but the animating force behind every community, in every borough.

The spark that ignites our unwavering resolve to do everything possible to ensure that every girl and boy, no matter what language they speak, what subway line they ride, what neighborhood they call home — that every child has the chance to succeed.

We recognize a city government’s first responsibilities: to keep our neighborhoods safe; to keep our streets clean; to ensure that those who live here – and those who visit – can get where they need to go in every boroughs. But we know that our mission reaches deeper. We are called to put an end to economic and social inequalities that threaten to unravel the city we love. And so today, we commit to a new progressive direction in New York. And that same progressive impulse has written our city’s history. It’s in our DNA.

Nearly a century ago, it was Al Smith who waged war on unsafe working conditions and child labor. It was Franklin Roosevelt and Frances Perkins who led the charge for the basic bargain of unemployment insurance and the minimum wage. It was Fiorello La Guardia who enacted the New Deal here on the city level, battled the excesses of Wall Street, and championed a progressive income tax.

From Jacob Riis to Eleanor Roosevelt to Harry Belafonte — who we are so honored to have with us here today — it was New Yorkers who challenged the status quo, who blazed a trail of progressive reform and political action, who took on the elite, who stood up to say that social and economic justice will start here and will start now.

It’s that tradition that inspires the work we now begin. A movement that sees the inequality crisis we face today, and resolves that it will not define our future. Now I know there are those who think that what I said during the campaign was just rhetoric, just “political talk” in the interest of getting elected. There are some who think now, as we turn to governing – well, things will just continue pretty much like they always have.

So let me be clear. When I said we would take dead aim at the Tale of Two Cities, I meant it. And we will do it. I will honor the faith and trust you have placed in me. And we will give life to the hope of so many in our city. We will succeed as One City. We know this won’t be easy; It will require all that we can muster. And it won’t be accomplished only by me; It will be accomplished by all of us — those of us here today, and millions of everyday New Yorkers in every corner of our city.

You must continue to make your voices heard. You must be at the center of this debate. And our work begins now.

We will expand the Paid Sick Leave law — because no one should be forced to lose a day’s pay, or even a week’s pay, simply because illness strikes. And by this time next year, fully 300,000 additional New Yorkers will be protected by that law. We won’t wait.

We’ll do it now. We will require big developers to build more affordable housing. We’ll fight to stem the tide of hospital closures. And we’ll expand community health centers into neighborhoods in need, so that New Yorkers see our city not as the exclusive domain of the One Percent, but a place where everyday people can afford to live, work, and raise a family. We won’t wait. We’ll do it now.

We will reform a broken stop-and-frisk policy, both to protect the dignity and rights of young men of color, and to give our brave police officers the partnership they need to continue their success in driving down crime. We won’t wait. We’ll do it now.

We will ask the very wealthy to pay a little more in taxes so that we can offer full-day universal pre-K and after-school programs for every middle school student. And when we say “a little more,” we can rightly emphasize the “little.”

Those earning between $500,000 and one million dollars a year, for instance, would see their taxes increase by an average of $973 a year. That’s less than three bucks a day – about the cost of a small soy latte at your local Starbucks.

Think about it. A five-year tax on the wealthiest among us – with every dollar dedicated to pre-K and after-school. Asking those at the top to help our kids get on the right path and stay there. That’s our mission. And on that, we will not wait. We will do it now.

Of course, I know that our progressive vision isn’t universally shared. Some on the far right continue to preach the virtue of trickle-down economics. They believe that the way to move forward is to give more to the most fortunate, and that somehow the benefits will work their way down to everyone else. They sell their approach as the path of “rugged individualism.”

But Fiorello La Guardia — the man I consider to be the greatest Mayor this city has ever known — put it best. He said: “I, too, admire the ‘rugged individual,’ but no ‘rugged individual’ can survive in the midst of collective starvation.”

So please remember: we do not ask more of the wealthy to punish success. We do it to create more success stories. And we do it to honor a basic truth: that a strong economy is dependent on a thriving school system. We do it to give every kid a chance to get their education off on the right foot, from the earliest age, which study after study has shown leads to greater economic success, healthier lives, and a better chance of breaking the cycle of poverty.

We do it to give peace of mind to working parents, who suffer the anxiety of not knowing whether their child is safe and supervised during those critical hours after the school day ends, but before the workday is done. And we do it because we know that we must invest in our city, in the future inventors and C.E.O.'s and teachers and scientists, so that our generation – like every generation before us – can leave this city even stronger than we found it.

Our city is no stranger to big struggles — and no stranger to overcoming them.

New York has faced fiscal collapse, a crime epidemic, terrorist attacks, and natural disasters. But now, in our time, we face a different crisis – an inequality crisis. It’s not often the stuff of banner headlines in our daily newspapers. It’s a quiet crisis, but one no less pernicious than those that have come before.

Its urgency is read on the faces of our neighbors and their children, as families struggle to make it against increasingly long odds. To tackle a challenge this daunting, we need a dramatic new approach — rebuilding our communities from the bottom-up, from the neighborhoods up. And just like before, the world will watch as we succeed. All along the way, we will remember what makes New York, New York.

A city that fights injustice and inequality — not just because it honors our values, but because it strengthens our people. A city of five boroughs — all created equal. Black, white, Latino, Asian, gay, straight, old, young, rich, middle class, and poor. A city that remembers our responsibility to each other — our common cause — is to leave no New Yorker behind.

That’s the city that you and I believe in. It’s the city to which my grandparents were welcomed from the hills of Southern Italy, the city in which I was born, where I met the love of my life, where Chiara and Dante were raised.

It’s a place that celebrates a very simple notion: that no matter what your story is – this is your city. Our strength is derived from you. Working together, we will make this One City. And that mission — our march toward a fairer, more just, more progressive place, our march to keep the promise of New York alive for the next generation. It begins today.

Thank you, and God bless the people of New York City!

It seems Cassie and P. Diddy might have split up. On Thanksgiving, Cassie was happy to post pictures of boyfriend P. Diddy celebrating the family holiday with her and her loved ones. Yet it seems the entrepreneur was not willing to extend the same gesture to her. The 44-year-old released his holiday card, which featured only his six children.

The holiday photo shows the family off in their formal best while in a mansion. Cassie's absence from the photo and from his New Year’s Eve party certainly suggests trouble in paradise. And then he rang in the New Year without her.

In October, Diddy said he is not interested in getting married anytime soon, though the couple has been together for more than a year. During an interview on "The View,” Diddy said he is not really looking to marry right now.

Could that be the reason they went separate ways? When the hosts asked him about marriage, he said, “It definitely would be a dream come true for me to just one day be ready for that. I’m not really looking because I know the responsibility that comes with that, and I think that a lot of people, they jump into that and they’re not honest with themselves.

"I’m brutally honest with myself. I don’t want to get married and not make that woman be the best. I’ve been close to it and when I’m ready, I’ll make the announcement, but when I do it, I’m doing it forever.”

Tottenham moved above Manchester United in the Premier League table as they staved off a late onslaught to win 2-1 at Old Trafford. Emmanuel Adebayor had continued his recent fine vein of form by opening the scoring late in the first half, before Christian Eriksen capitalized on some poor defending from the home side to double Spurs’ advantage midway through the second period. United responded almost immediately though Danny Welbeck, but despite finally supplying some concerted pressure late on they couldn’t find an equalizer.

The result ends David Moyes’ side’s run of six-straight wins, four of them in the Premier League, and means that they have now lost more matches in the league this campaign, six, than they did in the whole of last season. The champions have now dropped down to seventh in the standings, just past the season’s halfway mark, 11 points off the top.

Incredibly, it is their fourth defeat already at Old Trafford alone, with Tottenham following up their ending of a 22-year winless run last term with another victory to kick off the new year in fine style. While United had the bulk of possession throughout, Tim Sherwood’s decision to again play with two strikers, along with the pace and width of Aaron Lennon, meant that Tottenham created chances on the break throughout. Sherwood, who amended his all-out attacking strategy somewhat by selecting Etienne Capoue alongside Mousa Dembele in the middle of midfield, has now overseen a return of 10 points from 12 in the Premier League, with his side working admirably toward a common cause.

United, meanwhile, struggled for creative inspiration. Moyes ended up playing Wayne Rooney for the full 90 minutes, despite admitting that his groin injury should be given a couple of weeks’ rest. Again United were clearly looking to Rooney to make the difference both in attack and midfield, but, lacking sharpness, this time he couldn’t oblige.

The home side had actually begun encouragingly. Chris Smalling did well to go past Lennon in the fifth minute and manufacture a shooting chance but his effort was turned wide by Hugo Lloris.

It was Tottenham, though, that created the game’s first clear chance. Roberto Soldado, while his struggles continue in front of goal, showed again that he offers more to the side with a superb through ball to get Lennon in behind Patrice Evra but the winger’s finish lacked conviction and David de Gea blocked.

But in the 34th minute, after another move down the right, Tottenham went in front. Soldado again played his part, linking up nicely with Eriksen, before the Danish playmaker chipped in a fine cross that allowed Adebayor to peel off of Smalling, who never even jumped, and rise high to head back across the goal and in off the far post with De Gea unmoved.

The visitors’ lead could have been doubled just five minutes later. Lennon was sent in behind the again dozing Evra and this time produced a superb ball across the face of goal that looked primed for Soldado to convert at the back post but instead the ball came off the misfiring Spaniard’s knee and went harmlessly wide.

United were denied a penalty at the start of the second half when Welbeck went to ground after Vlad Chriches stuck out then quickly withdrew his leg. Referee Howard Webb was right not to award the spot kick and the England forward was lucky not to avoid a caution for diving.

The champions’ attempts to get back on level terms saw Moyes make a double substitution just past the hour mark, with Shinji Kagawa and Javier Hernandez replacing Smalling and Michael Carrick, but the substitution would instead lead to a goal at the other end.

The switch meant Antonio Valencia being moved to right back, but not for the first time this season his lack of defensive instincts in that position were to cost a goal. On this occasion, Lennon’s cross deflected off of Nemanja Vidic across the face of goal and Valencia was painfully slow to react as Eriksen stooped to head past the despairing attempt of De Gea to keep it out.

To their credit, Manchester United produced an immediate response. Januzaj, who showed flashes of his quality throughout, played a superb pass to get Welbeck in behind Chiriches down the right of the box and he coolly dinked the ball over Lloris to score his fifth goal in his last six appearances and get his side right back into the contest.

Lloris was soon forced into action from Januzaj and Hernandez to keep Tottenham in front before being involved in the game’s most controversial moment. As Ashley Young went charging onto the ball down the left of the box, Lloris came racing out then tried to pull out of a challenge but still made contact with the United winger. It was a tough call for the officials and it went against the home side.

Clearly furious by the decision, United’s pressure only increased in the closing minutes. Vidic had three chances in a matter of seconds in the 90th minute but it was a case of too little goo late as Tottenham held on with Lloris faultless in goal.

VIDEO Chelsea 3-0 Southampton: Highlights; Oscar And Willian Inspire Blues’ Second-Half Blitz At St Mary’s getdiscountz.blogspot.com

getdiscountz.blogspot.com ® VIDEO Chelsea 3-0 Southampton: Highlights; Oscar And Willian Inspire Blues’ Second-Half Blitz At St Mary’s

Brazilian duo Oscar and Willian came off the bench to score a goal apiece and lead Chelsea to a 3-0 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium. The arrival of Oscar was particularly pivotal as he played a part in all three goals, setting up the opener for Fernando Torres, to mean Chelsea keep pace with their Premier League title rivals.

After back-to-back narrow wins over Swansea City and Liverpool, Chelsea now appear to be hitting ominous form as they keep the pressure on Manchester City and Arsenal, just a point and two points, respectively, above them.

Captain John Terry had called their first-half showing against Liverpool on Sunday their best of the season so far, but, after a fast start in which Torres twice threatened, it was a more subdued opening 45 minutes by Jose Mourinho’s side this time around.

Southampton, with just one win in eight matches coming in, had Uruguayan creator Gaston Ramirez making his first Premier League start of the season, and enjoyed plenty of possession. The former Bologna man’s free-kick early in the second-half led to quick-fire chances for the home side as central defenders Dejan Lovren and Jose Fonte both had efforts blocked.

But it was to be Mourinho’s decision to bring on Oscar and Willian for Andre Schurrle and the visibly disgruntled Juan Mata in the 53rd minute that changed the face of the game. Within seven minutes Oscar, somewhat fortuitously had created the opening goal.

Before that, though, he was involved in the game’s most controversial incident. Oscar went clean through on goal and took the ball past Kelvin Davis before appearing to deliberately leave his leg outstretched to ensure contact with the Southampton goalkeeper and go tumbling to the turf. Referee Martin Atkinson impressively saw the maneuver for what it was and booked Oscar, rather than awarding a penalty and a red card for Davis.

But minutes later, Oscar would have a more positive, if somewhat fortuitous impact. On the hour mark, his cross from the left took a wicked deflection off of Callum Chambers to take it onto the far post and Torres anticipated quicker than anyone else to finish from close range.

Oscar laid on a more conventional assist 11 minutes later. This time he rolled a pass across the edge of the box for his fellow substitute Willian, who brought the ball onto his right foot before striking a powerful low drive into the net for his second Premier League goal.

The victory was complete eight minutes from time. Eden Hazard lofted a first-time pass over the pushed up Southampton defense to set Oscar away into the box and he made no mistake with a low left-footed strike past Davis at his near post to ensure Chelsea began 2014 with a flourish.

getdiscountz.blogspot.com ® VIDEO Liverpool 2-0 Hull: Highlights; Superb Luis Suarez Free-Kick Goal Takes Reds Back Into Top Four

Luis Suarez scored an outstanding free-kick to ensure Liverpool bounced back from successive defeats to beat Hull City 2-0 at Anfield. Having dropped from first to fifth following their losses to Manchester City and Chelsea in the past week, it was a welcome way for Brendan Rodgers’ side to begin the new year as Suarez struck his 20th goal of the Premier League season to add to Daniel Agger’s first-half header.

The win was also revenge for Liverpool having suffered their worst defeat of the campaign to date against Hull at the KC Stadium just a month ago. Making New Year’s Day taste even sweeter for Liverpool was a draw for Merseyside neighbors Everton that means the Reds move above their counterparts in Blue into that vital fourth place.

Without the injured Joe Allen and with captain Steven Gerrard only deemed fit enough for a place on the bench, Spaniard Iago Aspas was handed his first start since September as Jordan Henderson dropped deeper alongside Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho played through the middle.

With both sides playing their third game of the hectic festive schedule there was perhaps unsurprisingly a subdued beginning to the encounter. Suarez thought he had opened the scoring when he headed in Coutinho’s free-kick only to be denied by an assistant’s flag who spotted the merest of offsides.

There was to be no such reprieve for the visitors in the 36th minute. From Coutinho’s corner, Agger rose highest in the center of the box and powered a header down that beat both the efforts of defender and goalkeeper on the Hull line.

Hull came into the game on a real high, having recorded an extraordinary 6-0 victory over Fulham on Saturday. But Steve Bruce’s side rarely looked like getting on the score-sheet at Anfield. Henderson and Coutinho went close to adding a second for the hosts, who brought on Gerrard for his return from injury after the break, before Suarez, in typically stunning fashion, made the points safe.

The Uruguayan ran up to a free-kick 25 yards on goal and struck it with power and curve to send it soaring past the despairing dive of Allan McGregor in the Hull goal. With 20 goals in just 15 appearances in the Premier League, Suarez continues to demonstrate that he can fire Liverpool back to the promised land of the Champions League.

getdiscountz.blogspot.com ® Schumacher 'Stable', Media Urged To Respect Privacy

Seven-times Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher was in a stable condition on Wednesday, three days after suffering brain injuries in a skiing accident, his agent Sabine Kehm said outside the French hospital treating him.

Kehm urged journalists to respect the 44-year-old German's privacy after security guards said they intercepted a reporter disguised as a priest trying to get into Schumacher's room.

"Security got him before he came close ... I don't want to go into details of what exactly we are doing security-wise. However I can assure you there is security because we do have constant attempts from media and people to come close," she said.

Schumacher is battling for his life after slamming his head against a rock while skiing off-piste in the French resort of Meribel on Sunday.

"His condition remains stable this morning. At the moment this is good news but I don't want to go into further prospects as it is too early. He is still in an artificial coma," Kehm said at the hospital in the eastern city of Grenoble.

She added the "situation remained critical" and declined to comment on his recovery prospects. Doctors carried out an operation on Monday to alleviate the build-up of pressure in Schumacher's skull as a result of internal bleeding.

Schumacher's accident triggered an outpouring of concern among fans, former team-mates and rivals around the world. German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her shock and hopes for a recovery.

Schumacher's wife Corinna and teenage children Mick and Gina-Marie are at his bedside and he has received visits from his retired motor racing brother Ralf and close friends.

"They have the possibility to see him and be close to him so that is nice. There is always someone with him," said Kehm.

Schumacher, who is due to turn 45 on Friday, is the most successful Formula One driver of all times with a record 91 race victories in a career spanning more than two decades.

He left the sport last year after a less successful three-year comeback with Mercedes following an earlier retirement from Ferrari at the end of 2006.

VIDEO Arsenal 2-0 Cardiff: Highlights; Late Bendtner And Walcott Goals keep Gunners Top getdiscountz.blogspot.com

getdiscountz.blogspot.com ® VIDEO Arsenal 2-0 Cardiff: Highlights; Late Bendtner And Walcott Goals keep Gunners Top

Nicklas Bendtner has been much-maligned both inside and outside the Emirates, but the ultra-confident Dane could yet prove to have a pivotal impact on ending Arsenal’s long wait for the Premier League title.

Without the injured Olivier Giroud and with Lukas Podolski having offered little as his replacement, Bendtner came off the bench and made the most dramatic of impacts with the crucial goal to break Cardiff City’s admirable resolve less than two minutes before the end of regulation time. With the visitor’s lines breached, a second goal soon followed as Theo Walcott secured a priceless victory in injury time. The three points crucially keep Arsenal top of the table as the Premier League began its second half.

With Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Kieran Gibbs joining Giroud on the sidelines, this was always liable to be an encounter where the victory would be the only thing that mattered. And that’s exactly how it proved. Arsenal, despite deserving their win, were far from their flowing best, but not for the first time this season showed a precious ability to do what’s necessary to pick up all three points.

The late goals were hard on a Cardiff side who worked tirelessly throughout to deny Arsenal space to play their trademark intricate passing maneuvers. There was also a heavy sense of dĆ©jĆ  vu after the Welsh side, again led by interim boss David Kerslake, conceded two late goals on Saturday to snatch a draw from the jaws of victory against Sunderland. Still, for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was watching alongside owner Vincent Tan in the director’s box, there is much he can take from the performance by a side of which he is imminently expected to be confirmed as manager.

More to follow.
