Days after emerging unscathed from his first big test as Manchester United boss with a goalless draw against Chelsea, David Moyes will now attempt to accomplish something that eluded him in 11 years as Everton manager: win at Anfield.

It has been one of the main sticks used to attack Moyes’ ascension to one of the biggest jobs in the game that he was never able to taste victory away from home at any of the traditional top four of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and United. The Scot is fully aware that such a record will not be tolerated in his new role.

While he became accustomed to the fierce atmosphere of Merseyside derbies, Moyes is looking forward to his first taste of the historic rivalry between England’s two historically most successful clubs.

"Anfield has always been a difficult place to go," Moyes said, according to Manchester United’s official website. "It's a great stadium and I'm looking forward to going back there.

"[In some ways it's] no different to any other game as you can only get three points for a win but it'd be a big win if we can do that. Liverpool are one of the strong teams this season so if we can do that it can be a good start.

"I don't know [if it will be different going there with United] as I've not been involved in it yet. Everyone tells me it's a big rivalry, Liverpool and United, and it was like that with Everton as well. I'm looking forward to the game and part of coming to Manchester United is to be involved in these types of games."

Moyes’ predecessor, Sir Alex Ferguson, achieved his objective of knocking Liverpool firmly off their perch. Brendan Rodgers’ main objective is to now return the Merseysiders back to the Europe’s elite in the Champions League. And, after a season of beginning to implement his ideas last season, Liverpool have begun this campaign impressively with back-to-back victories. But Rodgers has claimed that his ambitions do not end there.

“We're not entering the league just to be fourth," Rodgers told the BBC. "Winning the league is about the best team not just the best players. That's our challenge.

"It's important for Liverpool to be up there; I think it's important for football for Liverpool to be there because this is one of the biggest clubs in the world. But it doesn't give you a divine right.”

Liverpool beat Notts County after extra time in the Capital One Cup in midweek but paid a heavy price. While Kolo Toure’s and Joe Allen’s injuries were not as bad as first feared, both seem unlikely to be fit for the weekend. Recent loan signing Aly Cissokho, meanwhile, could be up for up to six weeks.

Manchester United are in better health, with right-back Rafael the only injury doubt. Nani and Javier Hernandez could be involved for the first time this season.

Prediction: Moyes’ priority against Chelsea appeared to be to not lose the contest and it could be a similar scenario at Anfield. Liverpool should enjoy plenty of possession and will look to use the skill and movement of Philippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge and Iago Aspas to try and penetrate a strong United defense. Liverpool struggled against the top sides last season and, after a positive start to this campaign, this represents their first real test. Both sides may ultimately be reasonably happy to emerge with a point.

Activity in Chinese manufacturing sped up recently, as the government’s official purchasing managers’ index, or PMI, for the sector rose to 51.0 percent in August from 50.3 percent in July, according to the National Bureau of Statistics of China. The latest NBS figure for the manufacturing sector of the world’s second-largest economy came in above the median forecast of 50.6 percent by 12 economists polled by Reuters. The PMI report was released in Beijing Sunday at 9 a.m. CST (Saturday at 9 p.m. EDT).

China’s official manufacturing PMI has ranged tightly this year between a high level of 51.0 percent in August and a low level of 50.1 percent in both February and June. A reading above 50 percent indicates the sector is expanding, while a reading below 50 percent suggests the sector is contracting.

Comparing China’s official manufacturing PMI for the first eight months in 2013 with the PMI for the same period in 2012 shows its monthly mean has fallen from 50.98 percent last year to 50.53 percent this year and its monthly median has fallen from 50.45 percent to 50.50 percent on the same basis. During the period last year, the PMI ranged between a high level of 53.3 percent in April and a low level of 49.2 percent in August.

More color on the sector is expected when the HSBC China Manufacturing PMI compiled by Markit is released Monday at 9:45 a.m. CST (Sunday at 9:45 p.m. EDT). During the past three months, the competing PMI reports have painted different pictures of the Chinese manufacturing sector, with the HSBC-Markit report showing contraction and the NBS report showing expansion. The HSBC-Markit report is based on a survey of more than 420 purchasing managers, and the NBS report is based on a survey of about 800 purchasing managers.

United Nations inspectors have returned to The Hague in the Netherlands to begin the process of analyzing evidence collected in a fact-finding mission to Syria regarding the use of chemical weapons in the Ghouta region of Damascus.

U.N. representative Martin Nesirky told reporters at a press briefing on Saturday that the U.N. mission is “uniquely capable of establishing, in an impartial and credible manner, the facts of any use of chemical weapons based directly on evidence collected from the ground.”

Just hours ago, U.S. President Barack Obama announced at the White House that the U.S. would take military action against the Syrian regime in retaliation for the Aug. 21 chemical-weapons attack that reportedly killed 1,429 people, including more than 400 children.

Meanwhile, the U.N.’s 13-member team is “spending the day collating the samples and other evidence which they have prior to the testing in the laboratories in Europe,” Nesirky said.

Angela Kane, the High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, has briefed U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the investigation. She was a member of the team in Damascus.

While Nesirky declined to give a timeline for their final report, he did indicate that Ban has requested that the investigation be expedited. “Whatever can be done to speed up the process is being done,” Nesirky said. “The aim of the game here, the mandate, is very clear, and that is to ascertain whether chemical weapons were used, and not by whom,” he added.

Both Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government forces and the rebel opposition have been accused of being behind the chemical-weapons attack.

Nesirky rebuffed suggestions that the U.N. team left Syria to make room for the impending U.S. military strike. “I have seen all kinds of reporting suggesting that the departure of the chemical-weapons team somehow opens a window for military action of some kind,” he said. “Frankly, that is grotesque, and it’s an affront to the more than 1,000 staff, U.N. staff, who are on the ground in Syria delivering humanitarian aid and who will continue to deliver critical aid.”

This time around, the U.S. won’t be counting on the U.K. as a close ally. This week, the British Parliament voted not to take part in any military action in Syria, despite the best efforts of Prime Minister David Cameron to convince its members otherwise.

Meanwhile, France remains steadfast in pledging support for the U.S. strike. Obama spoke to French President Francois Hollande just after his announcement in the Rose Garden. “The two leaders agreed that the international community must deliver a resolute message to the Assad regime -- and others who would consider using chemical weapons -- that these crimes are unacceptable and those who violate this international norm will be held accountable by the world,” the White House said of the conversation, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Hollande is facing pressure to put the question of supporting a military strike in Syria to a vote before the French Parliament. “Like the U.S. president, who decided to consult the U.S. Congress in the name of democratic principles, the French president must organize, after the debate, a formal vote in parliament,” said Jean-Louis Borloo, leader of the French opposition Union of Democrats and Independents, or UDI, according to Reuters.

Obama said he would seek congressional authorization for a military strike against Syria once Congress returns from recess Sept. 9.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has rolled out its rumored iPhone trade-in program, enabling a consumer to receive a credit that would go toward buying either the new iPhone 5S or the new iPhone 5C, which are expected to be officially announced at a special media event on Sept. 10.

“[I]Phones hold great value. So, Apple Retail Stores are launching a new program to assist customers who wish to bring in their previous-generation iPhone for reuse or recycling,” Apple representative Amy Bessette said in a statement. “In addition to helping support the environment, customers will be able to receive a credit for their returned phone that they can use toward the purchase of a new iPhone.”

As previously reported, the trade-in program, dubbed the iPhone Reuse and Recycling Program, is part of company CEO Timothy D. Cook’s effort to improve iPhone sales at physical retail locations.

“I see channels doing it, and I like the environmental aspect of it, and so that part of it really is encouraging to me,” Cook said during Apple’s June earnings call. “The reason that is so attractive around an iPhone is that the residual value of an iPhone stays so high. That makes the trade-in programs a win-win from many points of view.”

According to Auto World News, Apple will accept only devices that work properly and are not water-damaged under the trade-in program. As the Wall Street Journal noted, employees at Apple retail locations will input information about iPhones being offered as trade-ins into a computerized system before telling consumers how much they’ll be getting. If a given iPhone a consumer wants costs less than the trade-in credit, he or she will receive a gift card with the remaining balance.

9to5Mac.com reported that a new iPhone must be purchased during the trade-in process.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based tech company is offering as much as $280 for an iPhone 5, the Wall Street Journal reported. And Auto World News said consumers can get $200 for an iPhone 4S and $140 for an iPhone 4.

Meanwhile, TechCrunch reported that this trade-in program exclusively applies to the iPhone, as opposed to any other Apple device.

Apple is expected to announce on Sept. 10 the release dates for the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C, with the rumored release dates being Sept. 20.

While there are concerns over Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime use of chemical weapons to kill nearly 1,500 of the country’s citizens, some Democrats remain reserved over U.S. use of military action in response.

“I am deeply concerned by the use of chemical weapons in Syria against innocent people,” U.S. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said in a statement, “but after over a decade of war in the Middle East, there needs to be compelling evidence that there is an imminent threat to the security of the American people or our allies before any military action is taken. I do not believe that this situation meets that threshold.”

Manchin urged President Barack Obama to “immediately call Congress back to Washington and engage in a serious debate on this issue before any military action is taken.”

Obama announced Saturday he is ready to order the use of limited military force against the Syrian government. The president made it clear that he didn’t need congressional approval to use military action, but that he is seeking its OK as part of a democratic process.

Republican Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina agreed that Obama “is correct” that the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons requires a military response. In a joint statement, however, the two senators said they cannot in “good conscience support isolated military strikes” that aren’t part of an overall strategy to remove Assad from power and end the conflict.

“Anything short of this would be an inadequate response to the crimes against humanity that Assad and his forces are committing,” the senators said. “And it would send the wrong signal to America’s friends and allies, the Syrian opposition, the Assad regime, Iran, and the world -- all of whom are watching closely what actions America will take.”

President Barack Obama is scheduled to make a statement concerning Syria today at 1:15 p.m., White House Press Secretary Jay Carney announced via Twitter a short while ago.

“The President will deliver a statement on Syria at 1:15 pm today in the Rose Garden today,” Carney’s tweet read.

More than 1,400 people have been killed in a chemical weapons attack, U.S. officials have said.

The president’s statement on Syria comes a day after Secretary of State John Kerry alleged that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime planned the attacks and that the Obama administration knows that “rockets came only from regime-controlled areas and went only to opposition-controlled or contested neighborhoods.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed the U.S.’ claims, saying its “utter nonsense” for al-Assad’s troop to take such actions as it is already winning the war.

“That is why I am convinced that [the chemical attack] is nothing more than a provocation by those who want to drag other countries into the Syrian conflict, and who want to win the support of powerful members of the international arena, especially the United States,” Putin said, according to the UK Guardian.

Arsenal top executive Ivan Gazidis has joined manager Arsene Wenger in the club’s pursuit of a splash move as the clock winds down on the summer transfer session.

Thus far the Gunners have failed to couple the signing of Matheiu Flamini and the free transfer of Yaya Sanogo with a top flight striker, but several opportunities have opened up with the Sept. 2 deadline looming and in the wake of injuries to Lukas Podolski and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

With plenty to spend and supporters panicking, the Emirates side can right their ship with a deal for Schalke midfielder Julian Draxler, according to the Daily Mirror. Gazidis reportedly visited Schalke's ground hoping to seal the deal for the 19-year-old German, who has quickly tallied 13 goals and 78 appearances in two short years in Bundesliga. Draxler could supplant the spot that seemed assured for Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye, as the Gunners reportedly pulled out of the bidding for the Frenchman after the price surged past £12 million.

But that cost is a pittance for the £60 million Schalke is demanding for Draxler, who signed a new two year contract at the conclusion of last season.

Rather than taking the chance on a younger player who’s never played outside of Germany, Arsenal could instead turn to the rising list of players itching to leave Spain, and make a play for Real Madrid attacking midfielder Kaka. The 31-year-old joins Angel Di Maria, Karim Benzema, and Mesut Ozil as top flight talent worried about their playing time with the impending arrival of Tottenham’s Gareth Bale to the Bernabeu.

Despite a total of 85 appearances and 23 goals for Madrid, Kaka saw his time on the pitch slowly dwindle each year under Jose Mourinho, and while he doesn’t appear out of favor with new boss Carlo Ancelotti, Kaka would continue to struggle should the Bale deal finally be consummated. Kaka also won’t cost Arsenal much, with his market value hovering around £9 million.

Arsenal have also added former Chelsea winger and current Lille staple Salomon Kalou to their diminishing list of options. According to the Daily Mail, the Gunners know Kalou could alleviate some of the damage done by Podolski and Oxlade-Chamberlain’s knocks, but he’ll cost £2.6 million and £60,000 per-week in wages.

The Mail stated Liverpool, West Bromwich Albion, and Cardiff City have also reached out for the 28-year-old, but they have been rebuffed. Kalou joined Lille last year and made 28 appearances and scored 14 goals, and has 57 caps and 21 goals for the Ivory Coast since 2007.

Riot Games will be holding a panel at PAX Dev in Seattle to discuss older "League of Legends" champions and their plans to remake them in order "to bring them to today's high quality standards," according to an e-mail we received from them Santa Monica, Calif. based firm.

Riot Games didn't specific what they meant by "older" champions. That could mean "LoL" champions that were released a year or two ago, or that could mean "LoL" champions that were released way back in the game's infancy in late 2009 and 2010.

Many newer "LoL" champions like Draven, Jayce, Graves, Zac, Hecarim, Fizz and others are really tough, often to the point that older champions can't stand up to them on a consistent basis. We're betting (and hoping) that Riot Games is out to fix this imbalance, while maintaining the viability of newer champions. By doing so, Riot Games would only be making one of the world's most popular games even more fun and possibly even more popular than it already is.

With that in mind, we've taken a look at the entire "League of Legends" champion roster. Here are five "LoL" champions that we think Riot will remake substantially so that they could compete against the newer, super-tough champions that the game offers.

1. Ashe

Ashe is almost completely dependent on her items in order to have any meaningful impact on games, which makes it difficult for Ashe players to hold their own against tough, newer champions. What's more, Ashe's natural movement speed is very low at 325. On top of that, none of Ashe's abilities give her any escapability, forcing the player to rely on using spells like Volley in order to slow oncoming enemy champions while also maintaining a safe distance. Ashe's fragility, combined with her dependence on items as well as her lack of escapability means that she should get a substantial remake.

2. Ryze

Ryze is a solid champion who, because of his partial reliance on maximum mana for damage, can be built to sustain a fair amount of damage with mana-heavy items that also give health, armor and magic resist like Rod of Ages, Frozen Heart and Banshee's Veil. However, unless Ryze is fighting a supremely fragile champion, Ryze can't deal the kind of heavy burst damage that most mages can. Considering how tough and durable many "LoL" champions are, we think Ryze could get a remake that would allow fans of his to deal much bigger chunks of damage in no time.

3. Shaco

Shaco is way too fragile to stick around in a teamfight any substantial amount of time, and he doesn't do enough damage to make up for it. Stacking multiple Jack in the Box spells in a bush for enemy champions to walk into doesn't always pan out, and if a tank walks into that part of the map then the boxes aren't likely to deal out much pain anyway. Because of Shaco's fragility coupled with his inability to do much burst damage, which could lead to a substantial remake.

4. Warwick

Not only does Warwick suffer from being a slow jungler, but he's not terribly durable either. His Infinite Duress spell gives him good crowd control, but because of his lack of durability, Warwick can easily succumb to death if the rest of the enemy champions gang up on him while he's casting Infinite Duress. Also, for a champion that's supposed to be a wolf, Warwick isn't terribly fast naturally. We like that Nidalee gains a little extra movement speed while she is in bushes, so why wouldn't a wolf gain something from hiding in a bush either? That's a relatively minor logic issue though. Due to his lack of survivability as well as his less than effectively jungling abilities, Warwick is due for a revamp.

5. Vladimir

While Vladimir can heal himself and benefits from not having to use mana, he's not terribly durable and has a hard time against tanky champions. What's more, his attack range is fairly low and while he can use Sanguine Pool to get himself into and out of fights at will, it doesn't last long enough to serve as a foolproof option in either situation. For these reasons, we think Vladimir could get a substantial remake.

Lana Scolaro, the woman Robin Thicke allegedly groped at the MTV Video Awards after-party, admitted that she was aware that the singer’s hand had strayed toward her bottom, but did not know that it was visible in the reflection of the mirror behind them.

“I knew his hand was on my butt. I posted it on Instagram and didn’t notice the reflection. But someone noticed it and commented," the socialite told Celebuzz.

“I was just like, ‘Oh I'll Instagram this photo with Robin Thicke, like everybody else,’” she told Celebuzz, adding, “I didn’t think it would cause this much drama. I didn’t know it would be all over everything like this.”

Ever since the photo hit the Internet, rumors have been swirling that the photograph was altered to seem like Thicke was groping Scolaro’s bottom. But, she quashed these talks, stating: “I don't even know how to use Photoshop. I didn't even know that was the reflection until I uploaded it,” Scolaro was quoted as saying by Aceshowbiz.

Scolaro, who met Thicke through common friends one week before the VMAs, said the “Blurred Lines” singer followed her to the DJ booth, and the photograph was clicked near there. The picture was taken by Thicke’s security guard who reportedly said that they make a cute couple.

The 36-year-old singer, who is married to actress Paula Patton, has remained tight-lipped about the butt-grabbing incident since the controversy broke after a Twitter user tweeted the photograph to Patton with a message, “Look at the reflection girl.”

The couple is currently on a family beach vacation in Miami, and Thicke posted on Twitter a photograph of their happy vacation indicating that the scandal has not affected his marriage. Thicke, who began dating Patton 20 years ago when he was just 16, married his childhood sweetheart in 2005. They welcomed their son, 3-year-old Julian, in 2010.

National title hopes are on the line for both No. 5 Georgia and No. 8 Clemson as the Southern rivals begin their seasons on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

The Bulldogs have won five straight over the Tigers, including a 41-17-4 all-time mark, but Saturday’s showdown is the first time both will meet as top 10 teams.

The victor may come down to two of most elite passers in the country in Georgia’s Aaron Murray and Clemson’s Tajh Boyd. Both seniors and Heisman favorites, Murray tossedfor 3,893 yards and 36 touchdowns while guiding Georgia to a second straight SEC East title last season. Boyd completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 3,896 yards and 36 touchdowns for an 11-2 record and razor-thin 25-24 victory over LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

Boyd is down his top rusher and receiver with Andre Ellington and DeAndre Hopkins jumping to the NFL. Senior running back Roderick McDowell will have the heaviest workload of his collegiate career after 83 carries and 450 yards and five touchdowns last season, and junior receiver Sammy Watkins will try to stay healthy and build off his 708 yards and three scores.

The Bulldogs have little to worry about on the ground with leading rusher Todd Gurley returning after a 1,385 yard and 17 touchdown freshman year.

Losing their top three tacklers would be a concern for Georgia, but sophomore outside linebacker Jordan Jenkins looks to take over the mantle as the team’s best defender. Jenkins recorded 31 total tackles and five sacks last season.

Linebacker Jonathan Willard returns for Clemson, after a 95 tackle and three sack 2012. However, the Tigers secondary did lose the six interceptions from safeties Rashard Hall and Jonathan Meeks, putting more pressure on sophomore Travis Blanks and junior Robert Smith to contain Murray.

While Samsung (KRX:005935) is expected to unveil the new Galaxy Note 3 at a media event, scheduled to take place on Sept. 4 in Berlin, a new report has claimed that the device could land on Three UK on Sept. 16.

According to a leaked internal document from Three UK, obtained by Engadget from an anonymous source, the U.K.-based carrier will get the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 on Sept. 16, almost two weeks after the handset’s expected unveiling.

The report comes hot on the heels of another report from SamMobile, which said that the South Korean tech giant would launch the Galaxy Note 3 on Sept. 27 in Taiwan, while the device would be up for pre-orders on Sept. 16. According to that report, Samsung could possibly release the Note 3 in other countries around the same time.

Coming back to the leaked Three UK document, the list included the Sony’s (NYSE:SNE) Xperia Z1, also known as Honami. According to it, the Xperia Z1 will also be announced on Sept. 4 and will be landing on the carrier on Sept. 24.

In addition to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the Sony Xperia Z1, the purported Three UK listing also showed that Nokia’s (NYSE:NOK) Lumia 1020 would be launched on the carrier on Sept. 25, while LG’s (KRX:066570) G2 smartphone would be arriving on Oct. 1.

If current rumors are to be believed, the Galaxy Note 3 will feature a 5.7-inch Full HD 1080p Super AMOLED display, 3GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel camera, 32/64GB storage capacity with a microSD slot, 3,200mAh battery and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Rumors suggest that the 4G LTE version of the Galaxy Note 3 will be powered by a Snapdragon 800 CPU, clocking at 2.3GHz, and an Adreno 330 GPU. On the other hand, the 3G version of the Galaxy Note 3 could be powered by the Exynos 5420 octa-core processor and a ARM Mali-T628 MP6 GPU.

The final reading of China’s purchasing managers’ index, or PMI, in manufacturing, released by HSBC-Markit Economics, is due on Sept. 1 at 09:45 p.m. EDT, and analysts vary on whether factory activity in China expanded or contracted in August, amid accelerated efforts by the government to resuscitate growth by boosting domestic demand.

HSBC’s preliminary survey of purchasing managers, or flash PMI, which was published on Aug. 22, found China’s manufacturing activity expanded to a reading of 50.1 in August -- its highest in four months and up from 47.7 in July.

The median consensus on HSBC's final manufacturing PMI, published by Capital Economics, is 50.2, which is marginally above the reading of the flash PMI.

According to Capital Economics, the preliminary reading of HSBC-Markit PMI was “far stronger than most had expected, providing further evidence that China’s economy has avoided an imminent hard-landing.”

“Flash and final readings have been very close recently, so we expect the final reading to be the same,” a research note from Capital Economics said.

But, a consensus figure published by FxStreet showed manufacturing contracted in August to hit 48.3, considerably lower than the preliminary estimate.

Official PMI data, published by China’s National Bureau of Statistics, which surveys state-supported companies, has traditionally showed more positive trends, as compared to private surveys such as the one released by HSBC-Markit.

“The official PMI has been hovering just above 50 for a while. The strength relative to the HSBC/Markit index most likely stems from the fact that the official survey is skewed to firms in heavy industries, which have benefited most from the recent investment-led rebound,” Capital Economics said.

“A strong rebound in the HSBC/Markit flash manufacturing PMI for August has added to evidence that a rebound is underway. As a result, we expect growth in industrial production to have picked up further,” the research group said.

Dina confirmed her split with Clint in an interview with Us Weekly on Thursday, and added that she remained friendly with her former husband although they had been living separately for over a year.

Rumors that their marriage is on the rocks started doing the rounds last year when Clint was seen without his wedding band at the TriBeCa Film Festival in New York City earlier this year.

“Clint fell out of love with Dina a long time ago,” an insider was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

Worldwide PC shipments are expected to decrease further in 2013, reflecting continued expansion of mobile devices, such as tablets and smartphones at the expense of traditional computers, according to new data from the International Data Corporation, or IDC.

IDC said that PC shipments will fall by 9.7 percent in 2013, marking the end of emerging market growth that the PC industry had come to rely on in recent years. The market, as a whole, is expected to decline through at least 2014, with only single-digit modest growth from 2015 onward.

"The days where one can assume tablet disruptions are purely a First World problem are over," Jay Chou, senior research analyst at IDC, said in a statement on Thursday.

According to Chou, although there have been some advancements in PC hardware segment, “the current PC usage experience falls short of meeting changing usage patterns that are spreading through all regions, especially as tablet price and performance become ever more attractive.”

IDC does anticipate a slow rebound in the PC market after 2014, as consumers are expected to refresh their existing systems, while businesses are likely to consider other platforms beyond Windows 7. However, according to IDC, the recovery in the PC market will be lukewarm without a sufficient mass of compelling applications.

“Aside from stubbornly depressed consumer interest, 2013 also marks the first year where emerging regions are expected to contract at a steeper rate than mature regions. Leading this trend is China’s revised forecast, which calls for a double-digit decline in shipments this year compared to 2012,” IDC said.

Meanwhile, the technology research firm has also modestly lowered its forecast for tablet computers for 2013 and beyond, due to growing competition from larger smartphones and the prospect of new categories such as wearable devices diverting consumer spending.

According to IDC, worldwide tablet shipments will reach 227.4 million units by end of 2013, down from a previous forecast of 229.3 million but still 57.7 percent up from shipments in 2012. Despite a slight slowdown this year, IDC said the tablet market will continue to grow at a rapid pace and by 2017 worldwide shipments could reach nearly 407 million units.

A juvenile suspect in the brutal gang-rape of a woman on Dec. 16 on board a bus in India’s capital, New Delhi, was convicted on Saturday, on charges of rape and murder, in the first verdict handed down in the case, which spurred nationwide protests and global media attention.

The convict, who was 17 at the time of the crime, was sentenced to three years in a reform facility -- the maximum punishment for a juvenile under Indian law.

The father of the victim, who spoke to reporters outside the court before the verdict was delivered, said: “We only want him to be hanged, that’s all. He had knowledge of what he was doing. How can he be considered a juvenile?” Hindustan Times reported.

The case had sparked debates on laws concerning crimes committed by minors, and the victim’s family and many among the public had demanded that the juvenile suspect should be treated as an adult and handed down the death penalty.

The prime suspect in the Delhi gang-rape case was found dead in prison, on March 11, while the trial was in progress in a special fast-track court.

The trial of the remaining four suspects is underway in the fast-track court, which is expected to deliver verdicts in mid-September.

The juvenile convict, who cannot be named, and the four adult suspects -- Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur -- pleaded not guilty in the trial.

The victim succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment in Singapore, two weeks after the tragedy.

The incident pressured the government to revise India's rape laws, and on March 20, a new bill was approved to include harsher punishments for sexual assaults, including the death penalty for repeat offenders and for rape attacks that lead to the victim’s death.

On Aug. 22, India’s Supreme Court had admitted a plea that sought to alter the legal interpretation of the term “juvenile,” so that it considers the mental maturity of offenders, rather than the physical age limit of 18 years.

The majority of the inquiries were related to criminal activity, according to Facebook’s report, but some pertained to national security issues.

More than half of the queries came from the U.S. government. And of the 11,000 to 12,000 requests by the U.S. government, involving 20,000 to 21,000 people who are active on Facebook, the social media company released at least partial data for 79 percent.

India was No. 2 in asking for data, with 3,245 requests involving 4,144 users. Facebook released data for only 50 percent of those inquiries.

With the Luis Suarez transfer saga mercifully coming to an end, Liverpool are keen to bolster their depleted defensive unit as two notable defenders have been linked to a move to Anfield with the deadline just three days away.

According to BBC Sport, the Reds are on the verge of signing both Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho. The Reds have been decimated by injuries of late with defenders Sebastian Coates, Kolo Toure, and Aly Cissokho sidelined, and are in desperate need of reinforcements.

Ilori, a Portuguese player with an English father of Nigerian descent, came up through the youth ranks at Sporting and made his debut in 2011. Chelsea reportedly showed mild interest in the 20-year-old center back in July, but Liverpool seem to be the only serious contenders, with the Reds having actively pursued him since April. Ilori is valued at around £7 million.

Sakho is expected to be an immediate contributor for Brendan Rodgers’s side should a deal be finalized. The experienced 23-year-old, who has been used primarily as a central defender at Paris Saint-Germain but can also play on the left, is likely to cost around £13 million. Liverpool had reportedly monitored Sahko when contract negotiations stalled with PSG this summer, with Serie A giants AC Milan and Roma also reportedly showing an interest. The France international’s place in the PSG squad has been marginalized with a succession of big-money signings, including the capture of Brazilian central defender Marquinhos this summer.

Rodgers is also keen on adding a reserve goalkeeper, and is reportedly looking at Shay Given. According to The Guardian, Given has been given the opportunity to leave Aston Villa after losing his starting role to American Brad Guzan. Given, 37, only started two Premier League matches for Villa last season and has three years remaining on his contract. His possible arrival at Anfield would move Brad Jones down the pecking order.

A loan deal for Chelsea’s Victor Moses might also be in the works. The Daily Mail reported this week that Chelsea want a £2 million fee for the winger. A hold up might be the 22-year-old’s wages, as Liverpool maybe hesitant to pay all of Moses’s £55,000-a-week salary.

Despite the need to strengthen the squad, things have gone well for Rodgers’s side so far. The Reds have enjoyed an auspicious start to their Premier League season with victories over Stoke City and Aston Villa in their first two matches. However, Liverpool face a tough test on Sunday when they fierce rivals Manchester United.

Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Tarrant County, is being urged to run for governor after an 11-hour filibuster against Texas’ latest anti-abortion bill propelled her to national fame. She has also raked in more than $1.2 million in just over a month since the filibuster.

In the six weeks following her June 25 filibuster, Davis raised more than $1.2 million, the Dallas Morning News reported Thursday. Almost $800,000 came from inside Texas, and about $470,000 came from outside the state. That makes for an impressive war chest for Davis in 2014, when she will either run to keep her current senate seat or make a run for the Texas Governor's Mansion.

Davis shot to national fame in June when she carried out a 11-hour filibuster to stop a law that would ban abortions in Texas after 20 weeks and place restrictions on state’s abortion clinics that are predicted to force most of them to close. The Legislature ultimately called a special session to pass the bill. Even if Davis’ efforts didn’t ultimately stop the law, they made her a darling of the Democratic Party and women’s groups overnight.

Since the filibuster, Davis’ fans and Democratic groups have encouraged her to run for higher office. A glowing profile in the September issue of Vogue month asked in its headline, “How Far Will Texas State Senator Wendy Davis Run?” On Aug. 5, Politico quoted Davis as telling an audience at the National Press Club in Washington, “I can say with absolute certainty that I will run for one of two offices: either for my state Senate seat or for the governor.”

That about one-third of her impressive fundraising haul came from outside Texas is evidence of Davis’ national appeal -- a fact that won’t erode the uphill climb faced by any Democrat seeking statewide office in the solidly red state. A significant amount of Davis’ money came from California, where contributions totaled $103,694, followed by New York at $68,764 and the Washington area at $59,000. The biggest out-of-state donors were labor groups and Planned Parenthood. According to Politico, Davis received contributions from nearly 24,000 individual donors, with an average donation of about $52.

Davis was expected to announce plans for her political future in the coming days, but on Thursday she said she would push back that announcement by several weeks while her father recovers from surgery-related complications, as the Dallas Morning News noted.

With just three days of the transfer window remaining, Manchester United have made several moves to try and make the first major signings of the David Moyes era. Midfield continues to be Moyes’s main area of focus, with Athletic Bilbao confirming on Friday that United have made a bid for Ander Herrera, while reports in Italy claim that an offer was also lodged for Roma’s Daniele de Rossi.

Herrera, 24, is a name that has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in the past, having played a starring role in Athletic’s victory over United in the Europa League 18 months ago. United’s bid for the former Spain Under-21 international was reportedly €30 million (£25.6m) and the La Liga club confirmed that they have turned it down.

“We have had an offer for Ander Herrera,” president Josu Urrutia said at a press conference, according to Sky Sports. “Our club is different, it is based on sentiment. Our objective isn't to make money.

"We received the offer last night and have communicated that we will not negotiate for our players. For a player to go, first the player must express his desire to leave the club and pay the release clause."

Herrera’s release clause is set at a reported €36 million (£30.7m) and it appears certain that United will have to pay that to bring the player to the club. Athletic, due to their policy of only having Basque players, are intent on holding onto their talent. Bayern Munich were forced to pay Javi Martinez’s €40 million release clause, while Fernando Llorente was not allowed to leave the club until his contract expired this summer.

Italian publication Corriere della Sera, meanwhile, is reporting that Manchester United have made a €12 million (£10.2m) offer for De Rossi. After spending his entire career with the club, the 30-year-old was expected to finally leave Roma this summer, with Chelsea linked with a move, following a difficult last season.

However, the story claims that the Italy international is now happy under new coach Rudi Garcia and has rejected the chance of a move to Old Trafford. De Rossi similarly turned down a transfer to Manchester City last summer. Corriere della Sera believes, though, that United will not give up easily and will return with a further approach before Monday’s transfer deadline.

The bids for the two midfielders may well be linked with United having an improved joint bid turned down for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines. According to The Guardian, Everton, having already rejected a joint offer of £28 million, have now said no to one of £36 million.

Given that Everton manager Roberto Martinez has admitted making an informal inquiry about Wigan midfielder James McCarthy, United look to have a better chance of luring Fellaini to Old Trafford with an individual bid. In contrast, Baines is thought to be deemed almost irreplaceable at Goodison Park.

Fellaini would also appear to be the player most needed at Old Trafford. The center of United’s midfield has not been tended to in several years, while, at left-back, Patrice Evra has returned to his impressive form of old. Alexander Buttner has been linked with a loan move away, but United still have Fabio as a back-up, with the Brazilian having returned from a loan spell at Queens Park Rangers last season.

NASA has announced its 2013 class of Innovative Advanced Technology Concepts for further development. The NASA concepts chosen include spherical robots, photonic laser thrusters, on-orbit construction of large objects, a new method of gravitational wave detection, sample return systems for harsh environments and a system to use the sun as a navigational tool.

The six concepts chosen by NASA will be given a grant of up to $500,000 and will be funded for two years. The goal of NASA’s Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) Program is to develop new technologies that could advance, or radically transform, future space missions. According to NASA, “These proposals have been selected based on the potential of their concepts to transform future aerospace missions, enable new capabilities, or significantly alter and improve current approaches.”

For the six concepts chosen for Phase II, the researchers leading the projects build off of the progress of Phase I concepts, which explored proof of concept and benefit of these programs. The two-year window will aim to explore and improve the designs of the concept and determine how these concepts can be implemented.

Michael Gazarik, NASA's associate administrator for space technology in Washington, said in a statement, “As NASA begins a new chapter in exploration, we're investing in these seed-corn advanced concepts of next-generation technologies that will truly transform how we investigate and learn about our universe. Advancing these proposals from universities, private companies and NASA researchers to Phase 2 studies allows new, futuristic ideas to move closer to becoming real tools for exploration.”

The concepts selected for Phase II of the NIAC Program are a long way from being ready but could play a crucial role in the future of space flight. NASA estimates at least 10 years before any of these concepts will be seen on a mission but the space agency considers the program an investment. As noted by NASA, 2012’s class of Phase II concepts has piqued interest from potential investors and may be incorporated in other NASA programs.

One of the projects selected by NASA is being developed by the Y.K . Bae Corporation and explores the concept of using laser thrusters which could improve a spacecraft’s maneuverability. The SpiderFab concept is examining ways of on-board construction of large objects, such as antenna or panels. Detecting gravitational waves could lead to the observation hard-to-observe objects that emit little light, such as black holes. The Spherical Ball Bot concept could lead to the creation of a collapsable robot system for exploring unknown terrain. The full list of concepts can be viewed below.

And I will tell you it has done so more than mindful of the Iraq experience,” Kerry said. “We will not repeat that moment. She admitted that she had been drinking alcohol throughout the evening,” the deputy said in a police report obtained by the Smoking Gun. “Nava was very unstable on her feet, spoke with profane and slurred speech, and smelled heavily of an alcoholic beverage. Due to her severely intoxicated stated [sic], she was placed under arrest for disorderly conduct.’

But the incident did not stop there, according to the deputy. Nava refused to keep her arms still while being handcuffed and resisted and pushed away a patrol car door when deputies tried to get her in the vehicle, according to the report.

As the deputy tried to help Nava get into the patrol car, she “continued to scream, shout obscenities, and resist getting into the vehicle.

“She then spit at me and shouted, ‘F--- you Justin Bieber!” the report went on to say. The deputy then placed a spit hood over Nava’s head “without any further incident” and took her to the county jail.

Troubled NBA free agent Lamar Odom was reportedly arrested early Friday morning and charged with a DUI, as rumors continue to swirl regarding his alleged addiction to crack cocaine.

Odom, 33, was pulled over at 3:54 a.m. Friday by the California Highway Patrol while driving in the San Fernando Valley, TMZ reports. The former Los Angeles Clippers star was arrested for DUI and taken to a local police station, where he was held on $15,000 bail. Police have yet to release his mugshot.

According to law enforcement sources, Odom was pulled over by police for driving too slowly on California’s 101 Freeway. Odom was reportedly traveling at 50 miles per hour, TMZ reports. Khloe Kardashian’s husband reportedly ignored attempts by police to pull him over, driving past three highway exits before acquiescing with the request. According to police, Odom was driving in a “serpentine manner.”

Sources reportedly told TMZ that Odom displayed “obvious signs of intoxication” before his DUI arrest. The 33-year-old failed multiple field sobriety tests and refused to submit to subsequent chemical tests when taken to a local police station.

Law enforcement sources added that police smelled alcohol on Odom and believe that he was under the influence of "both drugs and alcohol" at the time of his arrest. Odom reportedly exhibited signs of drug use, but police did not find drugs or alcohol in his car, TMZ reports.

The DUI arrest is just the latest in a series of reports regarding Lamar Odom’s alleged bizarre behavior. Earlier this month, multiple outlets suggested that Odom’s marriage to Kardashian was in danger after reports that the 33-year-old had been cheating on his reality television star spouse.

However, a report by TMZ later claimed that the couple’s marital problems stemmed from Odom’s alleged addiction to crack cocaine. Kardashian reportedly kicked Odom out of her house when the NBA star ignored an intervention and refused to admit to his alleged drug problem.

Subsequent reports suggested that Odom had been using several drugs, including Oxycontin and crack cocaine, for at least two years before news of his behavior broke. According to TMZ, Odom’s drug use began while he was still a member of the Dallas Mavericks.

Russia has announced plans to deploy the S-500 air defense missile weapon system by 2018. The S-500 system can hit targets in space and has a range of 500 kilometers, approximately 310 miles.

Interfax news agency reports the S-500 air defense missile weapon system will be ready for deployment by January 2018. The announcement was made by the commander-in-chief of the Russian Air Force, Lt. Col. Viktor Bondarev on Friday. Bondarev said, “We can now say we can make this system. It will hit ballistic and aerodynamic targets. It will have an excellent range of some 500 km,” reports Interfax.

The S-500 air defense system is an upgrade from the S-400 system, which has a range of 400 km (249 miles), reports Agence France-Presse. According to an anonymous source speaking to Interfax, the S-500 will be able to target threats from space and will be able to protect the entire country as an anti-aircraft and anti-missile system. The AFP article cites an even earlier deployment timeline, with the “star wars” missile system ready for use by 2017.

Russia continues to build advanced missile systems as it opposes plans for a Europe missile defense shield in Central Europe, reports AFP. The U.S. announced changes to the missile shield, eliminating interceptors that could target long-range intercontinental ballistic missiles, in March, reports the New York Times.

Currently, the S-400 is in limited use but Russia plans on adding 28 missile systems over the next 10 years. The S-300 is the most widely deployed missile system available in Russia and there has been concern over the country’s weapons contracts with Syria. According to the AFP, Russia is planning on fulfilling their contract to deliver four S-300 air defense systems to Syria. While Russia’s decision has caused concern, the earliest the contract would be fulfilled would be mid-2014 as the Russia cites the instability of the region as a major factor, reports Russia Today.

Whales have their own version of sunscreen.

The large marine mammals that spend up to six hours on the ocean’s surface protect themselves from the sun’s harmful ways by tanning, according to a new study published in the journal Scientific Reports.

"Most people think that whales can't get sunburned because of their dark skins," study author Karina Acevedo-Whitehouse, from the Institute of Zoology in London said. "But in the last decade, there have been increasing reports about skin lesions on whales and dolphins."

Researchers collected more than a hundred skin biopsies from blue, fin, and sperm whales in the Gulf of California between 2007 to 2009 using crossbows with modified arrowheads to take skin plugs, National Geographic reports.

"We found molecular evidence that blue whales increase production of melanin, so this would indicate that they tan," Acevedo Whitehouse said referring to blue whales.

While blue whales tanned, sperm whales increased production of repair genes to protect their cells from UV ray damage, study co-author Mark Birch-Machin, a professor of molecular dermatology at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom said. Fin whales were protected from sun damage altogether from their high melanin levels.

Scientists say that over the three-year period the number of blue whales with blisters caused by sun exposure increased by 56 percent which may have been caused by ozone depletion.

The study is the first to show from DNA analysis and skin that like humans, animals rely on pigments for sun protection

"The whales are being hammered by UV rays every day, every time they surface," Acevedo-Whitehouse said. "The big question now is whether their cellular repair mechanisms are being exceeded," which could lead to health problems including cancer – although skin cancer has yet to be identified on whale skin samples.

“We need to investigate further what is happening,” Birch-Machin said in a statement. “These whales occupy the same area year after year, so it is increasingly possible to understand the status of their populations, and what may be going on around them and in the environment. They are a reminder that changing climatic conditions are affecting every creature on the planet.”

But, for Aereo CEO Chet Kanojia, whose television streaming startup has drawn the ire of television networks who challenge the legality of its business model, the next advertising innovation needs to happen on the same platform he’s agitating: The small screen.

“Something has to happen,” he told International Business Times in an exclusive interview. “If you continue the current model, all people are doing is skipping commercials.”

The first problem, he said, is that most ads aren’t tailored to local markets – something his company, which streams local over-the-air broadcast signals and allows subscribers to play and record live TV on their computers, could help.

“The problem of running the same Toyota Tundra ad in Manhattan that you’re running in Kansas City or in a farmland somewhere … Why?” Kanojia said. “It doesn’t make any sense. Relevance is going to be the first thing that has to change.”

So, too, must the television industry’s tendency to inundate viewers with the same ad – over and over again.

“The current model of an excessive ad load, which essentially leads to a very high frequency exposure of the same copy over and over again, makes it unwatchable for the consumer,” he said. “It’s beginning to happen in online products, too.”

Display advertising on websites often imitates traditional print advertising, allotting space around and between editorial content for buyers’ ads, however obnoxious they may be. Online video viewing seems to be headed in the same lateral direction.

He noted Hulu -- the on-demand TV streaming site founded as a joint venture between Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq:CMCSA), Twenty-First Century Fox Inc (Nasdaq:FOXA) and the Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) – which mimics regular television with its several minutes’ worth of 29-second ads between segments of shows.

“Hulu is a good example,” Kanojia said. “You go blind watching the same ad over and over again.”

Branded content, also known as sponsored content, could be the answer.

Emerging news sites like BuzzFeed and The Atlantic Media Group’s Quartz have, so far, developed loyal followings, in part with their clean designs and relatively ad-free platforms. Instead, some of the sites’ content is written by advertisers.

A recent paper by three University of Texas at San Antonio professors suggested brands begin developing programming for the networks.

“Although it has not yet happened in the current television environment, the next logical step in developing product integration opportunities is for brands to create the programs themselves,” they wrote. “Assuming the programs are in fact popular, it is a win-win situation for networks and advertisers.”

Kanojia would likely agree. His own business is seen as one of the most disruptive forces in broadcast television now. And despite three federal court rulings in his favor, and against the consortium of major networks, the likes of CBS Corporation (NYSE:CBS) and Fox continue to rattle their sabers.

But, as Kanojia attacks the network’s cable bundling deals and antenna-based television watching, he thinks advertising has to change course, too.

“All those things have to change,” he said. “Otherwise, the consumers are just going to revolt and skip the ads.”

Arsenal’s tough Champions League draw, coupled with an untimely spate of injuries, has sharpened the mind even further in regard to the Gunners’ thin squad. Mathieu Flamini became Arsenal’s second signing of the summer this week when, like Yaya Sanogo before him, he was brought in on a free transfer. Manager Arsene Wenger has claimed that he is still intent on spending money but that, despite the close of the transfer window being just three days away, he will not make rash decisions.

"Yes," he said when asked whether he was still trying to sign players, according to Sky Sports. "[When?] I don't know. I am confident. We will not panic buy, that is for sure. It's not my strength to panic.

"You need good players in every position, and especially you need an attitude and way to play the game. The players here know the way we want to play and that is important. If we can add players who can integrate with that style of play we will do it.

"We work very hard on that, if we cannot we will not do anything stupid just for the sake of saying that we have done something. We do what makes sense or not, that is simple."

The Daily Mirror is among the sources claiming that Arsenal maintain an interest in Real Madrid trio Karim Benzema, Angel di Maria and Mesut Ozil. The imminent arrival of Gareth Bale has raised questions about the futures of all three at the Bernabeu, while the Spanish giants have also been linked with a move for former Arsenal target Luis Suarez. The Daily Mail believes that Wenger is intent in spending their entire £70 million summer war chest on bringing the trio to the Emirates.

Still, a deal for any of the three quality operators, let along all of them, remains unlikely at this stage. Di Maria and Ozil have both stated their desire this week to remain with Madrid, while Benzema’s agent has made similar comments about his client.

Di Maria’s place would be most directly under threat with the arrival of fellow-winger Bale. It has been reported in Spain that Madrid would be keen to move the Argentina international on but that manager Carlo Ancelotti is eager to keep him at his disposal. The 25-year-old was handed a start in Madrid’s match at Granada on Monday evening and set-up the only goal.

The only conceivable way for Benzema to leave, meanwhile, is if Suarez is sold. With so little time now left in the transfer window and Madrid still focused on bring a conclusion to the Bale saga, those deals look unlikely to materialize.

The Mirror believes that Arsenal have given up hope of signing Yohan Cabaye. The Gunners recently had a £10 million bid rejected for the France midfielder and are not prepared to meet Newcastle’s valuation of twice that figure.

Arsenal were linked to St Etienne’s Joshua Guilavogui as an alternative and the Daily Express now claims that that Wenger has decided to make an £8.5 million bid. The 22-year-old midfielder, who made his debut for France earlier this year, has spent his entire career with the Ligue 1 club.

Ahead of the annual meeting between the winners of the Champions League and Europa League, Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho have both tried to shift attention from their own rivalry and onto the array of stars that will line up on the pitch in Prague. A meeting of Bayern Munich and Chelsea has plenty of history to it in itself -- plenty of Bayern players will still have nightmares about their Champions League final defeat to the London side on home soil in 2012 -- but much of the focus has been on the two men in the dugout.

Guardiola and Mourinho, of course, clashed frequently during the two seasons in which they managed across the divide of Spain’s two giants, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Before that there was a keenly contested Champions League semifinal when Mourinho’s Inter knocked out the Catalans. The Portuguese has only won three of his 15 meetings with Guardiola, however, a record he had a hard time accepting when it was presented to him in the pre-match press conference.

"Your statistics are very wrong," Mourinho initially said, according to BBC Sport. "Go and see what happened when I was with Inter in the Champions League semifinal, the King's Cup final with Real in Spain, the Super Cup in Spain.

"Maybe you are right and I am wrong but I don't care. This is not about us, it's about Chelsea and Bayern."

Guardiola too, who famously lost his normal cool demeanor during the most intense run of fixtures between Barcelona and Madrid in 2011, was also not keen to talk about the coaches.

"We're here for the players, not the coaches," Guardiola said. "Millions of people around the world will watch the game, not the coaches."

The rivalry is enhanced by the two being almost ideological opposites in their philosophy about the game. And it is those ideals that both men are still looking to imprint on the sides they took over this summer.

On paper, Mourinho is faced with the bigger overhaul, having taken over a squad that was ironically built in large part with the hope that Guardiola would soon lead it. In his second spell at Chelsea, Mourinho has showed once more his natural reactive tendencies in a goalless draw at Manchester United on Monday. In the two wins prior to that, though, there have been signs of the quality interplay his collection of attacking midfield talent can produce.

Guardiola, on the other hand, has taken over a side that has just won an unprecedented treble and was already moving toward playing the possession and high-pressing soccer that he favors. Bayern Munich won the first three matches in their Bundesliga title defense, but drew 1-1 away to Freiburg on Tuesday when Guardiola made several changes to his side.

Guardiola’s first signing at Bayern, Thiago Alcantara, will be missing after undergoing ankle surgery, but Bastian Schweinsteiger is available after suffering a knock in midweek.

Chelsea have strengthened this week with Samuel Eto’o and Willian having arrived from Anzhi Makhachkala, but neither will be involved in Prague. David Luiz could be fit to make his first appearance of the season.

Prediction: Mourinho’s side will likely be happy to cede possession to Bayern as they were at Old Trafford earlier in the week. But, with Andre Schurrle struggling as a striker, of sorts, Fernando Torres could return. The crucial thing for Chelsea will be to get better service to their dangerous attacking players from midfield.

Guardiola has not been afraid to change a winning formula so far at Bayern. The double midfield pivot has been abolished, with the Spaniard instead looking to accommodate as many of his gifted playmakers as possible. That has led to some defensive vulnerability, which Chelsea will look to exploit on the break.

Chelsea could have some joy on the counter in what should be a closely fought match, yet Bayern are currently the more complete side and may just come out on top.

Particle collider? I hardly know ‘er!

CERN, the massive multinational science laboratory that houses the Large Hadron Collider, is playing host to a slightly different sort of event Friday night: a comedy show. Six research scientists will take the stage, along with four professional comedians, at “LHComedy: CERN After Dark.” University of Cambridge physicist Sam Gregson, who organized the show, managed to squeeze in a quick phone interview after a rehearsal.

“The idea of the routines is that the amateur people, they try to explain their research using the medium of stand-up comedy,” Gregson says. “The public gets to meet the scientists, and we have a lot of fun; we’re trying to educate but also enjoying some jokes.”

Gregson will be incorporating some of his research on antimatter into his own routine. He says his biggest comedic influence is probably Robin Ince, who co-hosts “The Infinite Monkey Cage,” a humorous scientific show on BBC Radio 4.

His scientist colleagues that will also be performing are: Benjamin Frisch, who has worked on projects that apply particle detector knowledge to breast cancer diagnosis; Claire Lee, who works on the ATLAS experiment at the LHC; Hugo Day, who is interested in refining the design of particle accelerators themselves; Alex Brown, who works in CERN’s Knowledge Transfer Group; and Clara Nellist, who works on 3-dimensional silicon detectors (and who also made a zombie movie at the LHC).

Joining the scientists are geek-pop cabaret musician Jonny Berliner; South African comedian Pierre Novellie; and Belgian comedian Lieven Scheire. The event will be hosted by Helen Keen, an English comedian behind the BBC Radio 4 program “It Is Rocket Science,” which narrates the history of human spaceflight, with jokes.

A program called Bright Club, where scientists get up and give funny presentations about their research, was conceived at University College London, but has inspired a franchise of nerdy comedy events through the U.K. and Australia. “Festival of the Spoken Nerd” brought science jokes to this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Across the pond, the U.S. has a wealth of science-themed comedy: Tim Lee, a biologist who traded life in academia for open mics (“I didn’t want to write any more papers,” he told the New York Times in 2009); Brian Malow, a contributor to astronomer Neil deGrasse Tyson’s radio show and the self-proclaimed Premier Science Comedian of Earth; and Norm Goldblatt, a physicist who performs comedy on the side.

“It’s not as limiting as it sounds,” Malow told the Times in 2009. “Science is in everything.”
