This may be the end of the Nexus 4 reign on the market as the 16GB model of the handset is now sold out at the Google Play Store, and will reportedly not be restocked.

Sources have told The Verge that the 16GB Nexus 4 will not be returning to the Google Play Store as it has now been discontinued by Google. This follows the recent selling out of the 8GB Nexus 4 just weeks prior, which was also confirmed as discontinued by The Verge. Notably, both models saw significant price drops before they ultimately sold out. This appears to be indicative of Google preparing to introduce a new smartphone to the market, likely the Nexus 5.

As the Nexus 4 is fading out of sight, the supposed Nexus 5 has been steadily gaining limelight. Recently, a Nexus branded handset believed to be the Nexus 5 was spotted at the unveiling of Android 4.4 KitKat at Google’s Mountain View, Calif. campus. After that the handset surfaced in FCC filings, and then reportedly a video showing off the Nexus 5 lock screen.

Meanwhile, the Nexus 4 should still be available at other U.S. retailers as well as other international Google Play Stores. However, once those supplies are depleted, the Nexus 4 will likely be gone from the market for good.

Those interested in unloading their Nexus 4 handsets before the release of the Nexus 5 can do so with Best Buy’s trade-in program, which offers up to $157.50 for a near-new Nexus 4, $150.00 for a gently worn handset, $67.50 for a handset in poor condition.

The Nexus 5 is expected to be unveiled in October alongside the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system. Recent reports suggest that the specific launch date will be Oct. 14; however, pundits urge that we take this rumor with a grain of salt. Among the proposed specs for the Nexus 5 include a 5-inch display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, full connectivity including LTE, a 13 megapixel camera with optical image stabilization, a fingerprint scanner and a 2,300mAh battery. Thus far none of these features have been confirmed by Google.
