Fans of the erotica trilogy “Fifty Shades of Grey” know the romance series is riddled with intense sexual scenes, but what will that mean for the film adaption of the best-selling series?

According to one of the films leads, “Sons of Anarchy” star Charlie Hunnam and the future Mr. Christian Grey, he isn’t afraid to strip down with his co-star, actress Dakota Johnson (“Ben and Kate”). Despite the 33-year-old actors’ willingness to go full monty on screen, filmmakers are considering going a different route by creating the highly-anticipated flick in a way will achieve an “R” rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) as opposed to the previously rumored “NC-17.”

According to report from USA Today the series author, E.L. James, and the studio behind the upcoming franchise has planned to create the film in hopes of receiving an “R” rating. Allegedly, the filmmakers will include sex scenes between the leads, billionaire businessman Christian Grey and sexually inexperienced college graduate Anastasia Steele, in the film but will not “push the sexual content” to an NC-17 rating level.

So why would a series known for its sadistic sexual nature chose to censor some of their most pivotal and fan-loved scenes? According to Kirby Dick, a film director and creator behind the documentary “This Film Is Not Yet Rated,” a look inside how the MPAA rates film, earning an NC-17 rating is a “kiss of death.” “Historically, the NC-17 rating has dramatically impacted box office,” said Dick. “It's the kiss of death in most cases.”

While aiming for a more scandalous rating may not be financially wise, others claims “Fifty Shades of Grey” director Sam Taylor-Johnson may push the boundaries for what is considered acceptable in an “R” rated film. “That’s the 1,000 question. Are they going to push things to a different level?” said Indiewire.com editor Melissa Silverstein. “She is going to have to walk a very fine line."

The first teaser trailer for the romantic drama is rumored to air during the 2014 Super Bowl in Feb. “Fifty Shades of Grey” is currently scheduled to be released Aug. 1, 2014.
